T-Mobile USA to launch LTE in 2013 using spectrum from AT&T

Alongside its fourth quarter operating results, T-Mobile USA has announced plans to significantly expand its network over the next two years, including the launch of its own 4G LTE network. Dubbed the "reinvigorated challenger strategy", the plan outlines the carrier's plans to remain competitive as rival networks grow their LTE coverage in the coming months and years.

In short, Tmo says it'll invest $4 billion in its network, which will go towards "network modernization", including the expansion of existing voice and ("4G" HSPA+) data coverage, as well as the new LTE network. The carrier says it plans to build this new network using spectrum obtained after the collapse of AT&T's buyout bid, as well as freeing up space for LTE in its existing AWS and PCS spectrum . In arriving a little late to the LTE party, Tmo CTO Neville Ray says it'll benefit from a "more mature device ecosystem", likely meaning improved radio efficiency, and in turn better battery life.

T-Mobile may have big plans for 2013, but things weren't exactly rosy during the last quarter of 2011. The network lost over 800,000 subscribers during the last three months of the year, which it attributed to "iPhone 4S launches by three nationwide competitors."

Support for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren - Michelle O'Byrne ...

A new support program launched today will ensure grandparents receive some much-needed care and attention while they raise their family?s next generation.

?

The Minister for Children, Michelle O?Byrne, said the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren family support program had been made possible through a grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund.

?

?The program, run by UnitingCare, will benefit carers who have suddenly had to put themselves second and the grandchildren who get a new start in life,? Ms O?Byrne said.

?

?Raising a child is challenging in anyone?s book, however for a grandparent who is often thinking about retirement, it?s even more so.

?

?The support provided will include personal counselling, case planning and management, parenting advice and skills development, along with access to advocacy services.

?

?Other relatives who take on the primary caring role of a child will also be able to receive the help on offer.?

?

Ms O?Byrne said that the UnitingCare Program would work with the Tasmanian Government?s Gateways Supporting Grandparent Carers program to run support groups for grandparents.

?

?The Program will help grandparents and other relative carers get the information they need from people who know what they are going through,? she said.

?

?Getting carers the support and information they need smoothly means they can focus on the child?s emotional needs during a time of significant adjustment.??

?

The Tasmanian Government has provided just over $310 000 from the Tasmanian Community Fund to the new program, in addition to funding for the Gateway Services.

?

Grandparents may find themselves caring for their grandchildren in two situations.?The first is when a child subject to a care and protection order is placed with their grandparents.?The second is when a grandparent takes on the primary care of a child, usually as a result of a family decision rather than child protection intervention.

?

Ms O?Byrne said that she hoped the support services on offer might allow the safe return of some children back to their immediate family.
