Are You at Risk Of Hypertension? Find Out | Health Blog

Hypertension or high blood pressure (systolic 140 mmHg or higher and diastolic 90 mmHg or higher is hypertension) can lead to several complications. It is important to know if you have high blood pressure (check your blood pressure from your doctor, nurse or other health care providers) and to know if you are at risk of high blood pressure. Complications of hypertension can be serious and life threatening and it is important to control blood pressure (if you have hypertension) within normal limit so that complications can be avoided and prevented.

The risk factors of hypertension are given below and find out how many risk factors you have. The more risk factors of high blood pressure you have the greater is the risk of developing hypertension (and complications as a result) for you. Some of the risk factors are modifiable and some are non-modifiable. However, one may have high blood pressure without having any risk factors mentioned below.

Non-modifiable risk factors of hypertension:

  • Age: The risk of hypertension increases with age. Unfortunately, we can do nothing about it. For females, the risk is greater after menopause.
  • Family history: Hypertension can run in families.
  • Race: Hypertension is more common in certain races, e.g. hypertension is more common among blacks than whites of similar age and sex and complications are also more common.
  • Pregnancy: This can lead to hypertension. In most of this cases blood pressure comes down to normal after delivery, but the risk of hypertension in future increases.

Modifiable risk factors of hypertension:

  • Obesity: Obese individuals are at greater risk of developing hypertension than normal body weight individuals. The greater your body weight the greater is the requirement of oxygen and blood volume increases, which results in high blood pressure.
  • Physical inactivity: Physical inactivity is one of the important risk factors of hypertension. Physical inactivity can lead to obesity, which itself is a risk factor.
  • Too much salt (sodium) in your diet: Excess salt (sodium) intake leads to retention of water in body, which increases blood volume and lead to high blood pressure. This is the reason doctors prescribe low salt diet for management of hypertension.
  • Too little potassium in diet: Adequate potassium is essential to maintain sodium balance. Too little potassium can lead to excess sodium and hypertension.
  • Tobacco use: Use of tobacco can raise blood pressure immediately temporarily. Use of tobacco reduces elasticity of walls of arteries and damage artery walls. This lead to narrowing of arteries and blood pressure increases.
  • Drinking too much alcohol: Drinking too much alcohol can damage the heart. But, moderate drinking (2 drinks a day) can be helpful to control blood pressure.
  • Mental stress: Mental stress can increase blood pressure temporarily and which may become permanent feature. Do not use commonly used relaxation techniques such as having a cigarette or eating. Use relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga etc.
  • Certain chronic medical conditions: There are several chronic medical disorders which increase risk of development of hypertension, such as diabetes, kidney disorders etc.

If you have the above-mentioned risk factors, you are at risk of developing hypertension. Be careful and take preventive measures to prevent development of hypertension.

Tax Hike Nation

Grover Norquist Grover Norquist

After every presidential election comes the battle of the Mandate. The president claims to have one. (Typically, it?s the president?s braggy advisers who claim he has one.) The losing party denies it. Yeah, sure, the other guy won, but the other party controls Congress (Democrats, 1984), and the third-party candidate spoiled the vote (Republicans, 1992), and not in a century has somebody been re-elected with so few electoral votes (Democrats, 2004), and anyway, the guy?s a secret Muslim who suckered people because he was never vetted by the media (you shouldn?t need a clue for this one).

The anti-Mandate meme is struggling now. Part of the problem stems from the pre-election ?unskewed polls? craze, which led to conservatives predicting a big Romney win, which made it harder to minimize what actually happened. The bigger part of the problem: The president promised to raise some tax rates. Voters agreed.

Republicans haven?t even tried to spin this away. At this week?s meeting of the Republican Governors Association, men who had failed to elect Mitt Romney admitted that they?d lost the tax issue. ?Elections have consequences,? said Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia. ?Clearly, overwhelmingly, people in America believe that raising rates on people that are in the upper income is part of the mix, the president is supporting that.?

Last year, at one of their overstuffed debates, the party?s 2012 presidential candidates were asked whether they?d accept ?one dollar of tax increases for 10 dollars of cuts.? They said no. Asked a similar question now, the Republicans who didn?t lose are shrugging. Gov. Butch Otter of Idaho, safe red territory, said he?d accept tax hikes ?if I got a lot of the things that I wanted.?

There?s really no disagreement about what hikes we?re talking about, or how popular they are. In 2012, as in 2008, Barack Obama pledged to keep most of the 2001 and 2003 income tax cuts, but not the one on incomes above $250,000. It would rise from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. That would raise, probably, $823 billion over a decade. Obama?s tax stance was to the right of Bill Clinton?s and Al Gore?s, which is sort of the secret of the whole election?centrist tax policy girded by happy class warfare against a man who owned a car elevator.

The top rate cut was always the least popular piece of Bush?s tax plans. That was why he said ?everyone? would get a tax cut if it passed; that was also why Romney, in his best presidential debate, said he wasn?t going to actually cut taxes on the rich, because he?d nail ?em later by closing loopholes. In the network exit poll, 47 percent of voters wanted to hike the tax rate on incomes over $250,000. Thirteen percent wanted to soak everybody; only 35 percent wanted no tax hikes. ?There was one thing that everybody understood was a big difference between myself and Mr. Romney,? said President Obama on Wednesday. ?I think every voter out there understood that that was an important debate, and the majority of voters agreed with me. By the way, more voters agreed with me on this issue than voted for me.?

Republicans get that, and some of them knew it would happen. The ?one dollar for 10 dollars? comment, says retiring Ohio Rep. Steve LaTourette, was ?one of the dumbest answers Romney was forced into giving, a stupid answer built out of a right-leaning process. There isn?t anybody sitting at home who thinks that. There?s a guy sitting on his couch in Ohio watching that, saying: ?Who wouldn?t take that deal?? ?

Even Romney got it, sort of. At the Boca Raton, Fla., fundraiser that was surreptitiously taped and given to Mother Jones, Romney theorized that ?our message of low taxes doesn't connect? because ?47 percent of Americans pay no income tax.? He couldn?t bring himself to admit that voters wanted to raise taxes on people like him. When he and Paul Ryan were on their game, they?d promise to make corporations (Democrat-friendly General Electric, for example) pay taxes. The admission: OK, it seems like voters really think that the rich are getting off easy.

Not since the 1970s have Republicans been so weak on the tax issue. Like Romney said, in his way, they?re victims of their own success. They?ve lowered rates to the extent that voters don?t fret about them. So they?re no longer talking about the Dec. 31 deadline for the tax rates as a Masada, a full-bore defense of the old rates. They?re talking about what they can get if they accede to the Democrats.

These same Republicans, of course, have signed the Americans for Tax Reform pledge. As Democrats now delight in reminding them, they have ?sworn an oath to Grover Norquist? that they won?t raise taxes, because the last time they did so?1991?they never got the cuts they were promised.

Lucky for us, Norquist takes some time from being caricatured to give actual quotes to people. On Thursday, he appeared at the Atlantic Ideas Forum in Washington, D.C., to defend himself. He quickly corrected his interviewer, Chuck Todd, when the pledge was described as a ban on ?tax increases.? The prohibition, said Norquist, was on ?net tax increases.? When John Boehner talked about raising revenue, well, fine, Republicans were allowed to do that. Did the exit poll say that 60 percent of people wanted higher taxes? Well, sure.

?Same exit poll,? said Norquist, ?63 percent said don?t raise taxes to reduce the deficit. Why those two things? The answer is, if you ask people: ?If the politicians raise taxes on the rich, do you think they?ll raise taxes on the middle class,? then 75 percent of Americans say yes.?

But that wasn?t quite what the electorate said, and Republicans know it. Obama?s Democrats have actually cleaved the tax issue in two. If the Bush tax cuts expire, yes, everyone?s tax rates will go up. But Obama will blame that on Republicans, and voters are ready to agree with him. If a new bill restores the cuts for lower tax brackets, Republicans can vote for it and fulfill their pledge, technically. They just haven?t figured out a new way to defend those high-end tax cuts that doesn?t get them shredded at the polls. ?It would have been so much easier,? says California Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, ?if Romney had won.?

Opinion: Climate Change: Lessons From Ronald Reagan

THE re-election of President Obama, preceded by the extraordinary damage done by Hurricane Sandy, raises a critical question: In the coming years, might it be possible for the United States to take significant steps to reduce the risks associated with climate change?

Ronald Reagan Library

President Reagan, who favored cost-benefit analysis, in 1984 at his western White House.

A crucial decision during Ronald Reagan?s second term suggests that the answer may well be yes. The Reagan administration was generally skeptical about costly environmental rules, but with respect to protection of the ozone layer, Reagan was an environmentalist hero. Under his leadership, the United States became the prime mover behind the Montreal Protocol, which required the phasing out of ozone-depleting chemicals.

There is a real irony here. Republicans and conservatives had ridiculed scientists who expressed concern about the destruction of the ozone layer. How did Ronald Reagan, of all people, come to favor aggressive regulatory steps and lead the world toward a strong and historic international agreement?

A large part of the answer lies in a tool disliked by many progressives but embraced by Reagan (and Mr. Obama): cost-benefit analysis. Reagan?s economists found that the costs of phasing out ozone-depleting chemicals were a lot lower than the costs of not doing so ? largely measured in terms of avoiding cancers that would otherwise occur. Presented with that analysis, Reagan decided that the issue was pretty clear.

Much the same can be said about climate change. Recent reports suggest that the economic cost of Hurricane Sandy could reach $50 billion and that in the current quarter, the hurricane could remove as much as half a percentage point from the nation?s economic growth. The cost of that single hurricane may well be more than five times greater than that of a usual?full year?s worth of the most expensive regulations, which ordinarily cost well under $10 billion annually. True, scientists cannot attribute any particular hurricane to greenhouse gas emissions, but climate change is increasing the risk of costly harm from hurricanes and other natural disasters. Economists of diverse viewpoints concur that if the international community entered into a sensible agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the economic benefits would greatly outweigh the costs.

Skeptics have rightly observed that even aggressive regulatory steps by the United States cannot stop climate change. Greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere for decades, and many nations, especially in the developing world, are contributing growing levels of emissions. For this reason, the unilateral actions of any country will not do what must be done to reduce anticipated warming and the resulting harms. Nonetheless, cost-effective reductions from the United States would help, both in themselves and because they should spur technological changes and regulatory initiatives from other nations.

For the United States, some of the best recent steps serve to save money, promote energy security and reduce air pollution. A good model is provided by rules from the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency, widely supported by the automobile industry, which will increase the fuel economy of cars to more than 54 miles per gallon by 2025.

The fuel economy rules will eventually save consumers more than $1.7 trillion, cut United States oil consumption by 12 billion barrels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by six billion metric tons ? more than the total amount of carbon dioxide emitted by the United States in 2010. The monetary benefits of these rules exceed the monetary costs by billions of dollars annually.

In a similar vein, recent rules from the Department of Energy are requiring greater energy efficiency from appliances like refrigerators, washing machines and small motors. For these rules as well, the monetary benefits dwarf the costs, and they include large savings to consumers as well as pollution reductions. There is a lot more to achieve in the area of energy efficiency, especially as technologies advance and continue to transform the once-impossible into the eminently doable.

The electricity sector is responsible for more than a third of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. In this domain, any regulations must be carefully devised, as they were in the case of fuel economy, to ensure that they do not impose unjustified costs, especially in an economically difficult period. But just as in that case, it should be possible to work with affected companies to identify flexible and cost-conscious approaches, producing reductions while minimizing regulatory burdens.

As in the case of the Montreal Protocol, an effective response to climate change requires many nations to act. China is the biggest greenhouse gas emitter on the planet, and it must become a leader in international negotiations, not an obstacle. But smart initiatives from the United States may well be an indispensable precondition for international efforts.

For those who seek to reduce the risks associated with climate change, it is ironic but true that the best precedent comes from a conservative icon. The big question now is whether today?s Republicans will follow Reagan?s example.

Cass R. Sunstein is a professor at Harvard Law School and a former administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.

Microsoft asks web designers to stop ignoring IE10 for Windows Phone

Internet Explorer has always been treated like a second class citizen in the browser world. It?s a very?solid?browser now, but its?reputation?has been hard to forget for a lot of people. This is never more?visible?than when you browse the web on a Windows Phone.

Many web designers simply don?t care about Windows Phone, and?Microsoft?is trying to change that. They have created a blog post for helping people adapt their webkit-optimized sites for IE. It?s a valiant effort, but we can?t help but think Microsoft is not in a position to make demands. Just look at this post about IE 10 for Win7 and you?ll see what designers think of IE.
