How Is a Standard Brazilian Blowout Different Than a Keratin Hair Treatment?

In the past, there have been many ways for women to attempt to straighten their hair. This is particularly true during periods of time where flat ironed, straight hair was in vogue. The most simplistic way that women used to straighten their hair, was to lay her hair on an ironing board, and iron her hair straight. In the African-American community, women use pressing combs at first, and then they use chemical straightening relaxers to straighten their hair. This method works, but the only problem is that the ingredients are too harsh for Caucasians, and for certain other groups of women, and their hair. Latina women have special challenges with their hair. For one thing, some of them have slightly frizzy hair, and some of them have curly hair that they would like to have permanently straight to save time. This is why one solution comes from a Latin country in South America called Brazil. Brazil has produced two versions of their own straightening solutions. There is the Brazilian blowout, and then there is the Brazilian Keratin solution.

The Brazilian blowout requires that a chemical be applied to the client's hair. Once that chemical is applied, then the client is set in a chair, while they will receive a traditional blowout. There are major problems with this process. The main issue is with the use of formaldehyde. When this process first came out, women actually had to use military grade masks in order to be able to withstand the fumes that were being applied on their hair. Because this is extremely dangerous, and because many people saw the insanity of this, a new method of straightening hair was developed.

This is when the next generation of Brazilian hair straightening came about. This is called a keratin straightening solution. What this entails, is the application of a keratin conditioner. Then process is finished with a flat iron that is extremely hot. The client is not allowed to wet their hair, or apply any hair accessories to their hair for 72 hours. This allows the chemicals to take hold, and to keep the strands of the hair straightening shiny. Many women rave about this, because it gives them an incredible glow to their hair. However, this process also has its own risk. The risk of this is that many companies have found ways to make inferior versions of this product. There are some formulas that also contained formaldehyde. So, it's important that if a person uses this type of conditioning straightener, that they use products from a company that doesn't use the toxic chemicals.

Beyond this, this process, along with any other chemical hair process, needs to be applied by professional. This process in particular is certainly not one that should be done at home. One's home kitchen or bathroom simply doesn't have enough ventilation that is required for this. However, when this is done in a very safe environment, there have been rave reviews about this. So, if a person is in good general health, and if they seek out a salon that uses the best quality products, then this might be a great thing for them to try. However, if they have health conditions, especially respiratory conditions, they may need to stay away from this.
