Whitefish Montana Real Estate | Timeshares ? Good And Bad Experiences
Some years ago, in 1981 to be exact, my wife and I lived in Calgary, Canada. It was that exciting time when children were just beginning to come into our lives and create all the wonder that only children can. For a while, we had two little girls and we began to think about how we could make vacations special in the years ahead. About that time, the real estate industry in Calgary was still booming (although almost at the end) and there were companies marketing all kinds of building projects. One caught our eye. It was a timeshare presentation in Calgary about a resort in Whitefish, MT, right on the Big Mountain Road, 5 miles from the ski area. The pictures were great, the sales pitch was convincing and we signed up for the 4th week of June. This was a ?white? week and so was cheaper to purchase. We lucked out, however, when RCI declared it to be a ?red? week and we had more trading power, although we had no idea what that meant.
The next June, we were ready to go for our first vacation at our new resort. We wrote to the management and were told that our unit had not been built yet, 10 months after we purchased and had made payments. Not to worry, they said, we could use one of the resort?s weeks since they had some in inventory. We went all excited about this new adventure. It was, in many regards, a great time. The unit we ?borrowed? from the resort was a large two bed unit with full kitchen, stone fireplace and a great setting in the woods. We liked it a lot and the kids were in heaven. The pool was warm and they could go anytime we were willing to take them. We returned each year and found ?our? unit had not been built (it still hasn?t!) but we did have a week from resort inventory. A little later, we tried an in-house trade ? our June week for Christmas week. The cross-country skiing was great and Santa even remembered where to find out kids!
The years passed and in 1991, we moved our family to the U.S. where we still reside and are naturalized American citizens. Since then, we?ve never been back to the resort in Montana but have just traded for various resorts through RCI. Now the children are all grown and on their own and we didn?t need our family resort in MT. Furthermore, even though we have had some excellent trades to other resorts, the reality is that it is harder and harder to find trades at a place and in a time frame that we want. In January 2010, we gave the condo back to the resort and have now used the last of our exchange weeks. When we figured up the cost of weekly maintenance, RCI membership and exchange fees, it didn?t make sense anymore. Switching to the points system made even less sense since there was an upfront cost of several thousand dollars. In addition, we were limited to RCI properties.
For us, the solution has been a vacation club which provides several levels of membership, including one which is a lifetime membership with no additional costs after the initial purchase. The inventory of weeks that are available is in real-time and they range from a low of $279 for seven nights to a maximum of $799. When compared to our costs and the inflexibility of trading weeks, this has been a great solution. My wife and I look forward to many weeks in different parts of the world without the struggles we have had with timeshare exchanges.
