China's Su and Uzbek Khubbieva win sprints (AFP)

KOBE, Japan (AFP) ? China's Su Bingtian became the Asian sprinter to beat when he defeated Japan's Masashi Eriguchi to win the men's 100 metres at the Asian Athletics Championships on Friday.

Su crossed the finishing line in 10.21 seconds to beat the Japanese by seven hundredths of a second. Another Japanese Sota Kawatsura was third in 10.30.

Eriguchi, a member of the 400m relay gold medal-winning team two years ago, was initially disqualified for a false start, but judges allowed him to run after a short discussion.

In the women's 100m Guzel Khubbieva of Uzbekistan, who narrowly lost to Japan's Chisato Fukushima at the Asian Games, ran a perfect race to win in an impressive 11.39.

She defeated the Chinese pair of Wei Yongli and Tao Yujia. Fukushima is only competing in the 200m.

Hosts Japan were cheered earlier in the day when Daichi Sawano regained the men's pole vault gold medal for a third time, following his victories in 2002 and 2005.

He jumped 5.50m to beat his compatriot Hiroki Ogita and China's Yang Yansheng, who both ended with 5.40m.

The host country narrowly missed another gold in the men's decathlon when Akihiko Nakamura finished almost 40 seconds ahead of Hadi Sepehrzad of Iran in the last 1,500m race.

Sepehrzad held his hands up in joy when he was announced as the overall winner with 7506 points, ahead of Nakamura's 7478 points.

Olga Tereshkova and Yevgeniy Ektov gave Kazakhstan two gold medals in the men's triple jump and women's 400m, while China dominated the women's discus throw with Sun Taifeng and Ma Xuejun finishing one and two.

Other titles went to middle eastern countries with Yousef Ahmed Masrahi of Saudi Arabia winning the 400m, Mohammad Alazemi of Kuwait winning the 1,500m, and Abubaker Ali Kamal of Qatar winning the 3,000m steeple chase in the men's.

Genzeb Shumi Regasa of Bahrain won the women's 1,500m in 4:15.91, beating Thanh Hang Truong of Vietnum and Jaisha Orchatteri Puthiyaveetil of India.
