LONDON (AFP) ? A 13-year-old girl has died after being struck by a falling tree branch while sitting on a park bench.
The teenager, named locally as Sophie Howard, was in Middletons Road Recreation Ground in Yaxley, Cambridgeshire, on Thursday afternoon when the accident happened.
She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Peterborough City Hospital where she died.
Friends of the girl told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph that they had gone to the park after their school closed because of strike action.
Hundreds of thousands of public sector workers went on strike on Thursday to defend their pensions, causing a third of English schools to close.
In a statement Sawtry Community College, which Sophie attended, paid tribute to "a popular young lady who approached her time at the college with poise and maturity.
"She was bright and cheerful and was held in high regard by all those who knew her, especially her friends and teachers,
"She was an extremely able student who appeared to have a great future in front of her; she worked hard and had made excellent progress during her time in the college.
"Sophie's loss is a tragedy and our thoughts are with her family and friends today and in the weeks to come, as they struggle to cope with this tragic event."
Police had cordoned off the area where the incident happened on Thursday night.
A Cambridgeshire Police spokeswoman said the case was not being treated as suspicious and had been passed to the coroner.
"We were called to an incident at Middletons Road Recreation Ground in Yaxley at 1440 BST," she said.
"Officers attended the scene where a girl had been hit by a falling tree branch.
"She was taken to Peterborough City Hospital where she later died."
