VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican acknowledged on Monday that the worst crisis in Pope Benedict's papacy had hurt the faith of Roman Catholics in their Church, but denied any cardinal was a suspect in a deepening scandal over leaked documents.
The scandal exploded last week when, within a few days, the head of the Vatican's own bank was abruptly dismissed, the pope's butler was arrested for leaking documents and a book was published alleging conspiracies among the cardinals or "princes of the Church".
Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told a news conference: "This is naturally something that can hurt the Church, and put trust in it and the Holy See to the test."
But Lombardi strongly denied Italian newspaper reports, quoting insiders who had themselves leaked documents, that a cardinal was among those being investigated over the scandal, which has been dubbed "Vatileaks".
"I categorically deny that any cardinal, Italian or otherwise, is a suspect," Lombardi said, adding that the pope was being kept fully informed of the case.
"He is aware of a delicate situation that we are living through in the Roman Curia. He continues on his path of serenity, his position of faith and morals that is above the fray."
Lombardi played down the depth of the scandal, which has caused a frenzy in the Italian press, saying talk that it was linked to an internal power struggle was "exaggerated".
The scandal concerns documents passed to Italian journalists over the last few months that accuse Vatican insiders of cronyism and corruption in contracts with Italian companies.
It has been brewing for months, but since it burst into the open it has shaken the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church.
After an investigation inside the Holy See, Pope Benedict's butler, Paolo Gabriele, 46, was formally charged on Saturday with stealing confidential papal documents. But leakers quoted by La Stampa, La Repubblica and other media said the leaking plot went much wider and higher.
BUTLER TO COOPERATE
One of Gabriele's two lawyers, Carlo Fusco, said his client, who is being held inside a Vatican police station, would cooperate fully with investigators who are trying to track down other suspects.
He said Gabriele, who attended mass on Monday morning and was visited by his wife, was "very serene and tranquil."
Italian newspapers, quoting other whistle blowers in the Vatican, said the arrested butler was merely a scapegoat doing the bidding of more powerful figures.
"There are leakers among the cardinals but the Secretariat of State could not say that, so they arrested the servant, Paolo, who was only delivering letters on behalf of others," La Repubblica quoted one leaker as saying.
The Secretariat of State is run by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the pope's powerful right-hand man, and the scandal appears to involve a power struggle between his allies and enemies, reminiscent of Renaissance conspiracies in the Vatican.
La Stampa daily quoted one of the alleged leakers as saying the goal was to help the pope root out corruption.
Aides say the pontiff is "saddened and pained" by the events. His critics say a lack of strong leadership has opened the door to infighting among his powerful aides - and potentially to the corruption alleged in the leaked documents.
Lombardi said the Vatican would not be hurried in its investigation by media pressure, "One can't say how long this will take...the questions will have to be dealt with in the time that is needed to have a clear idea of the situation."
He added: "When things like this happen, one has to confront them clearly, with much realism, not hide them and try to understand the dynamics of the events and the solutions to remedy them. There is a clear commitment on this from the pope and his aides.
"No one can deny that this is a situation of suffering, however," Lombardi said.
Many Vatican insiders believe the butler, who had access to the pope's private apartment, could not have acted alone. He is being held in a "safe room" in the Vatican police station and has been charged with aggravated theft.
Now known in Vatican statements as "the defendant" - he was until Wednesday night the quiet man who served the pope's meals, helped him dress and held his umbrella on rainy days.
WEED OUT CORRUPTION
The Vatican's announcement of the arrest of the butler came a day after the president of the Vatican bank (IOR), Italian Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was fired by its board of external financial experts, who come from Germany, Spain, the United States and Italy.
Gotti Tedeschi's ousting was a blow to Bertone, who as secretary of state was instrumental in bringing him in from Spain's Banco Santander to run the Vatican bank in 2009.
While news of the butler's arrest has filled pages and pages of newspapers in Italy and beyond, the Vatican's own newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, has ignored the story. Some say this may be because the paper itself has been an instrument in the power struggle between Bertone's allies and foes.
Documents leaked over the last few months included letters by an archbishop who was transferred to Washington by Bertone after blowing the whistle on what he saw as a web of corruption in a memo that put a number of cardinals in a bad light. Other documents alleged internal conflicts over the Vatican bank.
"I feel very sad for the pope. This whole thing is such a disservice to the Church," said Carl Anderson, head of the Knights of Columbus charity group and a member of the board of the Vatican bank who voted to fire Gotti Tedeschi.
Anderson told Reuters the bank president was sacked because of "a fundamental failure to perform his basic responsibilities". Gotti Tedeschi has said he was ousted because he wanted the bank to be more transparent, but Anderson rejected that assertion.
"Categorically, this action by the board had nothing to do with his promotion of transparency," Anderson said. "In fact, he was becoming an obstacle to greater transparency by his inability to work with senior management."
He said the Vatican was aiming to make the OECD's "white list" of states with an adequate level of financial transparency. Vatican sources have pointed to the bank head's very public ouster as an example of the drive to achieve this.
Gianlugi Nuzzi, the Italian journalist who has received many of the documents over recent months and last week published a new book called "His Holiness", on Monday criticized the Vatican for rounding up leakers.
"Surely, arresting someone and rounding up people and treating them like delinquents to stop them from passing on true information to newspapers would cause an uproar in other countries," he said. "There would be a petition to free them."

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Five Wives Vodka was named in bad taste and won't be stocked or special ordered at stores operated by the state of Idaho, regulators said.
The middle-shelf vodka is made by Ogden's Own Distillery in Utah, where the Mormon church is based. Its label carries the name and an image of five women, an apparent reference to polygamy, a practice abandoned by the church more than a century ago.
Idaho State Liquor Division administrator Jeff Anderson said the brand is offensive to Mormons who make up over a quarter of Idaho's population.
Regulators in Idaho notified Elite Spirits Distributor that the brand's concept is "offensive to a prominent segment of our population and will not be carried," according to a letter sent Thursday.
"The bottom line is, we represent everybody," Anderson added Tuesday. "It's masterful marketing on their part. But it doesn't play here."
Anderson said state stores already make hundreds of vodka brands available for sale and don't have room for another brand priced at around $20 a bottle.
Ogden's Own Distillery is trying to make the most of the rejection with a media campaign and sale of "Free the Five Wives" T-shirts.
It says the snub is unfair because a Utah beer named Polygamy Porter is available in Idaho. Anderson said Idaho doesn't decide what beer brands can be sold in grocery and convenience stores.
"We're a little dumbfounded by it all," said Steve Conlin, a partner and marketing chief for Ogden's Own Distillery. "The average person can look at our bottle and they don't find it offensive. It's certainly not obscene, which is what it would require for it to be banned."
Five Wives Vodka has been approved for sale in Utah, a state dominated by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's also available in Wyoming, another state that regulates liquor sales.
Nobody in Utah is raising a fuss over the brand, said Vickie Ashby, a spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Utah regulates all sales of hard liquor, wine and heavy beer, making the products available only at state-owned stores. Idaho and Wyoming control liquor sales with a mix of state-owned and privately-operated stores.
"We have a product that has sold nearly 1,000 cases in six months in Utah," Conlin said. "If the reaction is because of a religious concern, we think they are extremely misguided."

TORONTO (AP) ? Canada plans to introduce legislation to force striking Canadian Pacific Railway workers back to their jobs after talks stalled over the weekend, the country's labor minister said Monday, saying the freight service shutdown at Canada's second largest railway is hurting the economy.
Locomotive engineers and conductors went on strike Wednesday, shutting down freight service along nearly 14,900 miles (24,000 kilometers) of track in Canada and the U.S.
Labor Minister Lisa Raitt on Monday called Canadian Pacific Railway the backbone of the country's economy, and she has said she would force strikers back to work if necessary.
The railway and the union said talks broke off Sunday with little hope of resumption.
The back-to-work legislation would be introduced Monday, and the strikers could be ordered to work this week.
Raitt noted that Canadian Pacific Railway moves $50 billion worth of freight each year, including more than half of Canada's potash, wheat and coal. The Mining Association of Canada has expressed "grave concern" about the strike's impact.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government has cited potential economic damage in the past for preventing or ending strikes at Air Canada and Canada Post.
Opposition parties said the government is undermining the right to collective bargaining.
Major points of contention in the latest strike are pensions, certain work rules and fatigue management.
The strike has come amid big changes at the railway. Earlier this month, Canadian Pacific appointed an interim chief executive after chief executive Fred Green announced his departure, ending a monthslong battle that pitted New York activist investor Bill Ackman against a board of directors stocked with Canadian business titans.
The railroad also elected a new board of 16 directors, including seven backed by Ackman, whose Pershing Square Capital Management fund is Canadian Pacific's largest shareholder with about 14 percent of the company's stock.

MOGADISHU ? More than two thousand students have sat for their final exams in Mogadishu University for the fifth time since its official inauguration two decades ago on Saturday.
The students who are studying different courses in six different faculties across two campuses consist of men and women.
Prof. Dr. Ali Sheikh Ahmed, the President of the university, said despite violence and anarchy the university has not stopped teaching a single day since relocating to the outskirts of Mogadishu.
He added the new $25 million campus which was completed in 2007 can accommodate more than 12,000 students. It was partly funded by the Islamic Development Bank in Saudi Arabia, among other donors.
?The administration and teachers have sacrificed a lot during the civil war in the country, working in difficult conditions. The university is ready to add new faculties,? he said.
He thanked teachers, parents and students for having faith in the institution and for their dedication despite the instability in Somalia.
The university has also has small campus in the port town of Bosaasso in nort-east region of Somalia.
Mogadishu University is one of the leading institutions in Somalia and is currently ranked top 40 universities in Africa.

Jacob Philadelphia, and millions of other 8-year-old black children, are dreaming about becoming the President of the United States. Thanks to President Obama, that dream seems a little more attainable.
The New York Times took a look at a classic White House photo from three years ago showing President Obama bowing down before Jacob Philadelphia, who was 5-years-old at the time. Jacob, the son of a White House staff worker who was leaving his position, had quietly asked the president what his hair felt like.
According to the Times, Jacob said: ?I want to know if my hair is just like yours.?
President Obama bowed down to the little boy and said: ?Why don?t you touch it and see for yourself??
David Axelrod, who has a copy framed in his Chicago office, said that the photo shows a young boy realizing that one day he could also be president.
Axelrod said:
?Really, what he was saying is, ?Gee, you?re just like me.? And it doesn?t take a big leap to think that child could be thinking, ?Maybe I could be here someday.? This can be such a cynical business, and then there are moments like that that just remind you that it?s worth it.?
Carlton Philadelphia, Jacob?s father, said:
?It?s important for black children to see a black man as president. You can believe that any position is possible to achieve if you see a black person in it.?

Booker has gained much unwelcome attention from his own political party, while being nearly sanctified by Republicans, for the singular offense of telling the truth.
And then untelling the truth.
And then .?.?. stay tuned.
To know Booker is to like him. He?s one of those political figures whose persona telegraphs ?honest broker.? Educated at Stanford, Oxford and Yale Law School, he?s also a popular mayor in one of America?s toughest, most challenged cities. Open-minded and solution-oriented, he?s what we hope for in public officials. Or say we do.
But honesty is not always a rewarding trait in politics, especially during high-stakes election years, as Booker promptly learned when he recently spoke from the heart on ?Meet the Press.? He said that attacks on Bain Capital, where Mitt Romney made a fortune, were ?nauseating? to him, as were similar attacks from the right to resurrect the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
?I have to just say from a very personal level, I?m not about to sit here and indict private equity,? Booker said. ?To me, it?s just this ? we?re getting to a ridiculous point in America, especially that I know. I live in a state where pension funds, unions and other people are investing in companies like Bain Capital. If you look at the totality of Bain Capital?s record, it ain?t ? they?ve done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses.?
Hearts leapt.
While regular folks shielded their eyes from the blinding light of Truth, political operatives left and right shifted into warp speed. Republicans produced an insta-ad capitalizing on Booker?s remarks ? See? Even Democrats dislike President Obama?s attack on Bain ? while their counterparts on the left began launching correctives.
David Axelrod promptly made the rounds and explained to talk show hosts what Booker really meant. (As though Americans can?t understand what they plainly hear.) Others pointed out Booker?s own cozy relationship with equity capital political donors. And Booker, obviously scrambling to recapture favor with the Obama campaign, posted a YouTube video before another sun had set.
What he ?really? meant: ?Let me be clear. Mitt Romney has made his business record a centerpiece of his campaign,? Booker says in the video. ?He?s talked about himself as a job creator. And therefore it is reasonable ? and in fact I encourage it ? for the Obama campaign to examine that record and to discuss it. I have no problem with that.?
Commentators have all cast their ballots as to whether Booker should have corrected himself. Almost unanimously, the answer was no.
Obviously, if you?re a surrogate for the president, as Booker described himself on ?Meet the Press,? your job is to regurgitate talking points. No wandering around the reservation, no independent thinking, certainly no personal confessions. You absolutely do not declare the centerpiece of the president?s attack on his opponent to be ?nauseating.?
Unless it is. And unless it?s true. For you, you know when you?re alone with your conscience. Or having lunch with your private-equity donors, as the case may be. But definitely not while on TV!
On Rachel Maddow?s show, Booker dug a little deeper: ?Obviously, I did things in the ?Meet the Press? interview, as I told you, that did not land the points that I was trying to make. And in some ways, you know, frustratingly, I think I conflated the attacks that the Republicans were making with Jeremiah Wright with some of the attacks on the left. And those can?t even be equated.?
Worse, from the party?s perspective, Booker described himself as an ?independent Democrat.? Oops.
We may like independents in theory, but surrogates don?t get to be independent. You gotta pick one or the other. This has been the immediate lesson for Cory Booker. But the broader lesson for the public is that there?s no space in our body politic for an independent mind, even though more Americans describe themselves as independent than either Democrat or Republican.
Thinking outside the box may solve problems in the real world. But in the political realm, creative noodling will get you cast into the outer darkness. No matter which way you lean, The Machinery requires cogs, not cognizance.

It's not the cheapest, and it's not the first, but if you've been holding out on picking up an M-Mount adapter for your X-Pro1 with the hope that Fujifilm with launch a Leica-friendly accessory of its own, your patience does appear to have paid off. The camera maker just announced its very own M-Mount Adapter, featuring a 27.8mm distance between the lens mount and the sensor, an aluminum and stainless steel construction, and three levels of distortion correction. After you upgrade your camera firmware to version 1.10 (or later), you'll have access to an advanced M-Mount Adapter Settings menu, which utilizes pre-registered lens profiles and corrections. The software includes presets for 21mm, 24mm, 28mm and 35mm Leica lenses, leaving two additional slots for adding your own settings. You'll need to hang in there for a few more weeks -- the M-Mount Adapter is expected to ship for $200 in June. There's full specs in the PR after the break.

E! News has confirmed that Oxygen has purchased a reality show from J. Lo that centers around her dancing tour troupe, and will be led by the singer's 25-year old boy toy.
As the group's supervising choreographer of the group, Smart will be highlighted on the series, but he won't be the only mover, shaker and grinder to appear on the show. Look for it to take viewers behind the scenes of Lopez's tour.
It's unknown if Jennifer herself will make any appearances, but the program will premiere in early 2013. Think you'll tune in?
