Debt crisis live: Britain won't cede more power to EU

17.41 More reaction to the summit. Ratings agency, Fitch, said the summit eases near-term pressure on euro sovereign ratings. Here's a taster of Fitch's statement:

QuoteOur initial assessment of the summit of EU leaders held in Brussels this week is that it has exceeded expectations, although these were low, and marks a positive step that eases near-term pressure on eurozone sovereign ratings.

...

Eurozone leaders' decision to create a 'single supervisory mechanism' for banks is an important step towards ensuring the long-run viability of the euro. Once such a mechanism has been created, the soon to be established European Stability Mechanism (ESM) could recapitalise banks directly. In Fitch's opinion, the creation of a single pan-eurozone bank supervisor with the power to intervene and, if necessary, directly capitalise banks could greatly improve the functioning of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

17.32 The International Monetary Fund has commented on the decisions made at last night's summit. It "strongly welcomes" the decisions by the European Council, saying the steps will help to break the feedback loop between banks and sovereigns. It adds the decisions are "the right steps" towards completing monetary union.

17.28 Angela Merkel has been speaking in the Bundestag this afternoon ahead of a vote this evening on the European Stability Mechanism and a new fiscal compac enshrining tougher budget rules.

She told politicians that the proposals agreed at last night's summit to give the European Central Bank new supervisory powers for banks in the eurozone would be ready by the end of the year:

QuoteIt's not going to happen in a single day and not in two weeks either. It's a longer process, a proposal for that should be ready by the end of the year

Urging polticians to bank the new bailout fund, she said:

QuoteToday Germany, with the approval of the fiscal pact and the ESM by all parties in both houses of parliament, will send an important signal, a signal of unity and of determination, a signal that we are overcoming the European debt crisis in a sustainable way

17.16 More on the markets: Spain and Italy were the biggest gainers today, while equities across Europe soared. In Frankfurt the DAX 30 rose 4.33pc to 6,416.28 points and Paris' CAC 40 soared 4.75pc to 3,196.65 points. Milan rocketed up by 6.59pc, Madrid by 5.66pc and Athens by 5.68pc.

16.56 Friday's trading session in London has now finished at the FTSE 100 is up 78 points - 1.42pc - to 5371.15. Commenting on today's rise, David Jones, chief market strategist at IG Index, said:

QuoteThe announcements in the early hours of Friday morning that European leaders had decided to bail out Spanish banks without adding an extra debt burden for its government were received very positively in London, with the market clinging onto gains in a manner that contradicted the moves seen earlier in the month. Last night's progress is very welcome since it suggests that the eurozone is indeed keen on solving its existential crisis, although doubts linger about how long the current positive atmosphere can last.

It would be dangerous to assume that the crisis is on its way to a lasting resolution, but for now at least markets are just glad that some progress has been made. Whether the line can hold in the weeks to come remains to be seen, but every journey begins with a single step, and investors for now are happy to believe that this represents the start of something far more lasting.

16.45 The White House has been making some comments on the eurozone agreement. It is apparently encouraged by the progress made in the debt crisis talks, but has cautioned that Europe's challenges will not be resolved overnight. In addition, it believes that "a lot of details" need to be worked out by the Europeans.

15.28 Slovenian prime minister Janez Jansa has insisted that there's no need for a bailout - at the moment.

QuoteFor the moment, Slovenia is not in danger of having to request help from the European Union's bailout funds. We believe that with the measures that have been implemented, in particular the bill for balancing public finances, there is no such danger right now.

The only uncertainty is the banking sector. Due diligence is currently being carried out in the main banks and we will be able to give an answer to that question (on EU help for the banks) only after the results are known.

15.24 As we near the end of the trading session in Europe, the markets are green across the board and making strong gains. The EU summit may not have provided that much detail, but what it did provide has been well received.

14.38 The US markets have opened for the last trading session of the week, month and first half of the year. They've soared on news from the EU summit, echoing the gains made in Europe.

The Dow Jones has jumped 1.44pc, the S&P 500 is 1.57pc higher and the Nasdaq climbed 1.77pc.

14.15 David Cameron is asked his final question, on whether or not the summit was a failure for Angela Merkel:

QuoteI don't think we should see it in that way. At the end of the day, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, they may be playing each other at football, but when it comes to the eurozone they should all be on the same side.

I don't see this as some sort of face-off between Italy and Germany or whoever, taking the right steps is right for all of them. Angela Merkel is being asked to do some things that are difficult for her to dliver.

Then he signed off, saying: "See you at another one of these before long, I guess."

14.11 An interesting question on an in-out referendum on the EU, which was side-stepped without a definite answer...

14.08 More from David Cameron, who is now taking questions:

QuoteEurope is changing, there's a change taking place as the countries of the eurozone follow the remorseless logic of having a single currency. My job is to make sure we ensure all the safeguards we need... so that our say in the single market is safeguarded.

Britain is not going to cede more powers to Brussels... I think there are powers that should be going in the other direction.

I completely understand why some people want an in-out referendum. some people just want to get out: 'stop the bus, I want to get out'.

We used to be part of those bailout schemes, and I got us out of those bailout schemes, and that's saved us real money.

14.00 On banking union, Cameron says he expects to see "enhanced cooperation" under existing treaties, so that will offer "lots of protection" for the single market. But a single European regulator is not something which the UK should be accountable to - that should only apply to the eurozone, not the EU, he says:

QuoteIn my view that must be the Bank of England for our banks... rather than a single European regulator. It's never entirely clear how far these changes will go, exactly which treaty clauses will be used... that's one of the reasons that when you come to these summits you've got to be absolutely focussed on the text and what you're signing up to. We want a functional eurozone, not a dysfunctional eurozone, but we need those safeguards. Permanent vigilance is required.

13.54 A quick aside to the Libor scandal - David Cameron says that he'll ensure that FSA fines are used to benefit the taxpayer and not reduce future FSA payments by the banks.

13.53 He's said that he is against a larger EU budget:

QuoteWhat we need to do is not spend more, but spend better. I made it absolutely clear that the British rebate is not up for discussion.

13.50 David Cameron is now speaking in Brussels:

QuoteWe have to stand behind our own banks, but I don't want British taxpayers paying for European banks.

13.24 Francois Hollande says that a financial transaction tax will be in place before the end of 2012, just in time for Christmas. He says that Germany strongly backs the plan, but that a rate hasn't yet been agreed on.

But what won't be ready by the end of the year is France's ratification of the fiscal pact, he adds...

12.54 There's another podium in Brussels, next to Merkel's, this one standing in front of a Union Flag, so we can expect a David Cameron announcement soon.

12.48 Merkel says that many countries had asked for the ESM's preferred creditor status to be kept intact, apart from in the case of Spain. She also says that conditions will still apply to any bailouts.

12.39 Merkel says that the EFSF will be used to recapitalise Spanish banks, then the ESM will take over later - without its preferred status (that is, being first in line to reclaim money in case of default). This is important, because it will reassure private investors that they won't be as likely to lose out. But this will only apply to Spain, warns Merkel, not other countries that seek help in the same way.

12.34 Angela Merkel is now giving a press conference:

QuoteWe've had a debate that was partially controversial... but this doesn't come as a surprise.

12.21 A quick update on European markets, which are firmly holding on to the gains they made in early trading.

The FTSE 100 has edged up 1.38pc - and is now down just 0.05pc on the year - the CAC is up 2.79pc and the DAX has risen 2.57pc.

11.58 German lawmakers are - right now - holding a special meeting to discuss what the opposition Social Democrat party sees as a government U-turn on eurozone bailouts.

Just hours before a crunch vote by both houses of parliament on the EU fiscal pact and the permanent ESM bailout fund, the centre-left SPD party called for an extraordinary meeting of the parliamentary finance committee.

11.27 Simon Denham, chief executive of Capital Spreads, points out that Spain's 10-year bond yield is now floating around 6.55pc - not as low as could have been hoped for after an unexpected result from the EU summit - and no more sustainable in reality than 8pc:

QuoteThe euphoria over the euro banking agreement has sent stocks higher but the shine seems to be fading as I write.

In reality the banking side was always the easier bit to the problem in that the banks are actual legal entities who have to operate in a fiscally responsible manner (don?t laugh) whereas national governments clearly do not.

The real question is still out there, namely the pooling of eurobond risk which the Germans are naturally averse to.

11.14 Eurozone consumer inflation held steady at 2.4pc year-on-year in June, keeping the door open for the ECB to cut interest rates. Christoph Weil, of Commerzbank, said:

QuoteWe assume that the inflation rate will not continue its downward trend in the coming months. This is based on our forecast for the oil price. We think the recent fall of the oil price was exaggerated and expect the price for a barrel of Brent to exceed $100 again in the second half of the year.

Nevertheless, the ECB may react with relief to the recent decline of the inflation rate as it reduces the risk that the collective bargaining parties will assume higher inflation rates in their pay negotiations. Furthermore, inflation risks are currently low. In view of weak demand, companies are finding it difficult to raise prices.

There is thus no obstacle to an ECB rate cut from the side of inflation. We expect the central bank to lower its repo rate from 1pc to 0.75pc at its meeting next week.

10.56 More from Mervyn King: the UK economy is at risk of a "vicious circle" of reduced bank lending if banks' assets deteriorate. Uncertainty and tighter credit conditions have acted as "strong headwinds" to UK recovery.

10.53 Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, says that the problems in the eurozone are deep-seated and not something that UK authorities can fix. He adds that a Greek exit would "probably be manageable" for British banks.

10.52 We have a video for you from this morning's press conference with Herman Van Rompuy and Jos? Manuel Barroso.

10.46 So David Cameron is calling it a victory and claiming that he helped shoot down proposals that might have subjected the City to regulation under plans for a eurozone ?banking union?. But Bruno Waterfield says there's a bit more to it than that...

10.25 Our man in Brussels, Bruno Waterfield, brings us this update from the EU summit, which suggest that the discussion got rather heated last night:

David Cameron is declaring victory over Brussels proposals that all banks, in every one of the EU?s 27 countries, should be placed under the direct control of a powerful European ?banking supervision system?.

The Prime Minister, warning that he could block the use of the ECB as a eurozone bank regulator, had text deleted from the EU summit agreement after bad-tempered exchanges last night.

The summit text had said: ?Existing legislative props on bank resolution and deposit guarantees should be adopted by the end of year. Building on theses the commission will submit by the end of 2012 further legislative propsoals in a single European banking supervision system covering all banks, a European deposit guarantee scheme and a European bank resolution scheme.?

In a major blow for Michel Barnier, the French commissioner responsible for EU financial regulation, the move to a pan-EU system are scrapped after a row predicted by the Daily Telegraph yesterday.

Summit language encouraging eurozone members to ?deepen coordination of their economic policies? was also dropped.

10.19 Retail sales data out from Greece this morning shows a 13.5pc drop in April, month-on-month. That's an improvement on the previous month, which saw a fall of 16.2pc, but hardly worthy of celebration. In just two months that comes to almost an erosion of almost a third of retail sales...

10.02 While we're on the subject of the ECB, eurozone bank loans to the private sector contracted last month. The central bank's regular monthly money supply data showed that loans contracted 0.1pc in May after growing by 0.2pc in April.

09.53 The Greek bank jog (not quite a run) continues, with worried businesses and customers pulling their money out to invest somewhere they see as safer.

ECB data out this morning show that private-sector deposits in Greek banks fell almost 5pc in May after slight increases in the two previous months. The total fell to ?163bn from ?171.5bn. They are at their lowest level in six years.

09.24 David Cameron has spoken to the BBC on his way back in to the summit in Brussels this morning, saying that "important steps forward" were taken last night. He says more was needed for short term stability.

EU leaders will have filled up on strong coffee over breakfast - talks ended at 4.30 this morning after dragging on for more than 13 hours.

09.18 Some contradictory statements are emerging this morning. Angela Merkel says there will still be conditions to meet for countries which need bank recapitalisation, and that to be involved in the bond-buying programme there will still be troika checks. But Italy's PM Mario Monti says those who seek EFSF or ESM aid won't need to have troika oversight. He's also added that Italy doesn't intend to seek such help "at this time".

09.11 Fabrizio Gora tweets a picture of Libero's front page this morning, which is unlikely to please the German chancellor.

08.55 They say bad news comes in threes, and that'll ring true for Angela Merkel this morning. First Germany was knocked out of Euro 2012, then she was forced to back down at the EU summit and now German retail sales have dropped for a second month running in May. Sales unexpectedly fell 0.3pc from April.

08.34 Kathleen Brooks, research director at Forex.com, brings us her views on the EU summit deal:

QuoteEurozone authorities have attempted to break the toxic link between banks and sovereigns. The move on Spain is extremely positive in our view. Although it doesn?t irradiate the problem of bad loans on Spain?s banks? balance sheets it does mean that banking debt won?t clog up Spain?s sovereign balance sheet that was relatively healthy before the banks started to fail. This should reduce Spain?s borrowing costs in the short to medium term.

The move on scrapping credit seniority for bailout loans to Spain?s banks is a very positive move to us as it encourages the private sector to invest in Spain and Italy?s sovereign debt.

But there are also problems, she warns:

QuoteThe EFSF/ESM rescue funds only have ?500bn of available capital, yet the total liabilities on Spain?s and Italy?s balance sheets? top ?2.4 trillion... This could curb the market?s enthusiasm as we haven?t heard any signs that these bailout funds will be topped up.

08.18 European markets have surged in early trade after the news from the EU summit just a few hours ago. Futures were pointing to climbs across the board, apart from in Germany and France - but in the event even they've decided to join the rally.

The FTSE 100 has climbed 1.74pc, the DAX is up 2.39pc and the CAC has gained 2.86pc. Spain's IBEX is 4.05pc higher and Italy's FTSE MIB is up 3.07pc.

08.01 The fake Angela Merkel has a knack for summing up the situation with a single tweet, and doesn't disappoint this morning.

07.30 European Council chairman Herman Van Rompuy seems relieved that a deal has been done. There were some worrying moments during last night's stand-off between Spain and Italy and Germany.

He said the aim was to create a supervisory mechanism for eurozone banks involving the European Central Bank to break the "vicious circle" of dependence between banks and sovereign governments.

QuoteWe are opening the possibility to countries that are well behaving to make use of financial stability instruments in order to reassure markets and to get again some stability around some of the sovereign bonds of our member states. The aim is of course to make the euro an irreversible project.

07.15 Just as well for France that EU leaders have agreed a ?120bn growth pact, as the figures out today show first quarter growth stalled.

National statistics agency INSEE says its final estimate of GDP was unchanged quarter-on-quarter, confirming an initial estimate published last month. The eurozone's second largest economy grew just 0.1pc in the fourth quarter.

07.05 Yields on 10-year Spanish and Italian bonds fell to 6.48pc and 5.87pc respectively in early trading, after eurozone leaders agreed a plan to allow rescue funds to be used to stabilise debt markets and directly recapitalise banks. One trader said:

QuoteIt's definitely risk on for now, but it looks like Germany have been rather backed into a corner and we'll have to see what comes out today.

German 10-year bond yields rose 10 basis points to 1.61pc.

06.45 Mario Monti, the Italian Prime Minister, celebrated the agreement as a ?very important deal for the future of the EU and the eurozone?. Bruno Waterfield writes:

QuoteHe could not resist reminding Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, that Italy had also won on the football pitch, by defeating Germany two goals to one for a place in the finals of the European Championship.

Here is a summary of what they agreed:

? Spanish banks will be recapitalised directly by allowing a ?100bn EU bailout to be transferred off Spain?s balance sheet after the European Central Bank takes over as the single currency?s banking supervisor at the end of the year.

? Relief for Spain was accompanied by a pledge to begin purchases of Italian bonds using EU bailout funds to reduce Italy?s borrowing costs with a lighter set of conditions, based on meeting Brussels fiscal targets rather than intrusive IMF oversight.

? A promise was also made to ?examine the situation of the Irish financial sector? offering possible relief to Ireland by relieving the government balance sheet debt burden.

? The Spanish bank bailout, to be agreed on 9 July, will initially use the euro?s European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) before it is transferred into a new permanent fund later this year.

06.40 Despite apparent market optimism, some scepticism remains. Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. said:

QuoteWe don't expect a magical formula that can solve the problem right out from the EU summit. However, if we can see the stances from all the leaders, especially from Germany - that they are heading in the right direction - I think going forward, it should be OK.

Euro rise in Asian trading on news of the eurozone agreement. Graph: Bloomberg

06.38 The euro spiked against the dollar after news of the deal, and Asian stock markets rose sharply. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.4pc and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 2.2pc.

However, while the shares in London, Italy and Spain are expected to rise when market open on Friday, those in Germany and France look set to fall.

06.35 So, Monti and Rajoy got their way, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel retreating. Bruno Waterfield in Brussels sums it up succinctly, but with a warning:

Ambushed - she always gets her revenge in the end, as Sarko discovered.

06.34 It looks like those late night summits are back. Eurozone leaders agreed early this morning to take emergency action to bring down Italy's and Spain's spiralling borrowing costs and to create a single supervisory body for eurozone banks by the end of this year, a first step towards a European banking union.

It followed a tense first day at the EU summit, with Italian prime minister Mario Monti and his Spanish counterpart, Mariano Rajoy, refusing to sign off on a ?120bn growth package until EU paymaster Germany approved short-term measures to ease their cost of credit.

06.30 Good morning and welcome back to our live coverage of the European debt crisis.

adacoda.com ? Avoid the dangers of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs ...

(NaturalNews) Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as acid reflux or ?heartburn,? is a digestive disorder that affects millions of Americans, many of whom have been hoodwinked into taking dangerous proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and other gastric acid inhibiting drugs that only make the problem worse, and cause other deadly side effects down the road. But little do most people with GERD know that the condition is fully curable through simple dietary changes, as it is directly linked to poor diet and chronic nutrient deficiencies.

A recent report by the New York Times (NYT) explains how PPIs, which include popular heartburn medications like Prilosec or Zegerid (omeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole), Aciphex (rabeprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole), Nexium (exomeprazole), and Kapidex (dexlansoprazole), essentially block nutrient absorption, which as we all know leads to disease. It also highlights how artificially inhibiting stomach acid, which is naturally responsible for maintaining bacterial balance and processing food, eventually cascades into a death sentence for patients taking PPIs.

?Studies have shown long-term PPI use may reduce the absorption of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, calcium and vitamin B12,? says the report. ?Other research has found that people taking PPIs are at increased risk of developing pneumonia; one study even linked use of the drug to weight gain.?

Many people who take PPIs not only suffer from more chronic health problems than the average person, but they never actually cure their acid reflux in the process. Without making the proper dietary changes necessary to balance stomach acid and restore a healthful digestive rhythm, those who take PPIs consistently, and for long periods of time, will progressively become more and more unhealthy.

Since PPIs are the third largest category of drug sales in the U.S., representing nearly $14 billion in annual revenues for Big Pharma, efforts to bury these inconvenient facts about PPIs have been repeated and persistent from the mainstream media machine. Pharma-backed doctors also continue to defend the use of PPIs, claiming that their supposed benefits somehow outweigh their risks.

This is obviously not the sentiment of the many people who have been injured by PPIs, though, some of who have joined together to petition the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put a black box warning on PPIs. (http://www.pharmalot.com)

PPIs are not only addictive, but they also have the unintended effect of actually causing the stomach to produce more acid-producing cells to compensate for the decreased acid levels. This means that when people stop taking PPIs, their acid reflux symptoms can intensify to unprecedented levels because of too much acid, which can cause serious harm and potential death.

Some simple solutions for curing GERD naturally, however, include adding foods like organic apple cider vinegar, simple baking soda, and cayenne pepper into one?s diet. Avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugars, which promote bacterial overgrowth and digestive upset, and eating plenty of whole, raw, and fermented or cultured foods will also help to naturally settle the stomach and prevent leakage of acid back into the esophagus, without the need for drugs. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

Chris Kresser, a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of integrative medicine, has created a helpful, and amazingly thorough, series on how to cure GERD without drugs that includes reducing the factors that promote bacterial overgrowth and improper levels of stomach acid; replacing them with factors that promote balanced levels of stomach acid, enzymes, and other nutrients vital for proper digestive health; and restoring beneficial bacteria and a healthy mucosal lining through diet.

You can read his amazing report here: http://chriskresser.com

Why Rafael Nadal lost so early at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal was eliminated in the second round of Wimbledon. It's the first time since 2005 that Rafael Nadal has left a major tournament in the second round. What happened??

By Howard Fendrich,?Associated Press / June 29, 2012

Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic reacts after defeating Rafael Nadal of Spain during a second round men's singles match at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon, England, Thursday, June 28, 2012.

?Rafael Nadal bumped into his unknown and unheralded opponent as they headed to a break between games. Perhaps it was incidental contact.

At the previous changeover, Nadal stood and barked at the chair umpire, complaining about being distracted by 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol while serving. Later, Nadal shook his head and frowned when a Wimbledon official explained that, with light fading and the second-round match heading to a fifth set, they'd need a 45-minute break to close the retractable roof and turn on the lights at Centre Court.

Of all the things that rattled Nadal on Thursday evening, the most significant was Rosol's gutsy game ? his 22 aces, violent groundstrokes and shot-punctuating staredowns. Put it together and Rosol, making his debut at the All England Club, overpowered 11-time Grand Slam champion Nadal 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, one of the most astonishing results in tennis history.

"That's (what) happens when you play against a player who is able to hit the ball very hard, hit the ball without thinking and feeling the pressure," the second-seeded Nadal said. "At the end, when the opponent wants to play like he wanted to play in the fifth (set), you are in his hands, no? Everything was going right for him."

It's the first time since 2005 that Nadal lost in the second round at any major tournament. It also ends two streaks for the Spaniard: He reached the final at the previous five Grand Slams, and also reached the final the last five times he entered Wimbledon, winning the grass-court tournament in 2008 and 2010.

"He played a good match," Rosol said, "but I think I was better today."

Absolutely true.

Actually, seven-time French Open champion Nadal came oh-so-close to a straight-set exit. He barely avoided losing the opener, forced to erase three set points before taking it in the tiebreaker when Rosol plopped a gimme forehand into the net.

Rosol took the next two sets, pounding serves, returning well and swinging away from the baseline. It was an aggressive approach, as though Rosol wanted to out-muscle the ultimate on-court bully, right down to imitating the way Nadal sprints back to the baseline after changeovers.

Even Rosol considered it stunning he was able to stay close, much less win.

Asked afterward what his expectations had been, Rosol replied: "Just to play three good sets, you know. Just don't lose 6-0, 6-1, 6-1."

They're both 26 years old, yet Nadal entered the day with 583 career match wins, and Rosol 19. Nadal owns 50 titles, Rosol zero. In 178 prior Grand Slam matches, Nadal never had lost to a foe ranked 70th or worse. In five previous visits to Wimbledon, Rosol lost every time in the first round of qualifying ? not even the main event. Qualifying. This is only the Czech player's second career tour-level event on grass; the first was two weeks ago.

He thought Nadal was trying to throw him off in the third set with a bit of gamesmanship. First, after Rosol broke to go ahead 2-1, Nadal complained to the chair umpire about something his foe was doing to bother him. "So do you think that's fair?" Nadal asked. "Let me know."

At the following changeover, they crossed paths on the way to their seats, and Nadal offered a body-check.

"He wanted to take my concentration. ... I knew that he will try something," said Rosol, who has a tribal tattoo covering his entire left calf, and wore green laces on one shoe, white laces on the other. "I was surprised that he can do it on the Centre Court, Wimbledon, you know. It's, like, something wrong."

Companies feel the heat as China slowdown takes toll

HONG KONG (Reuters) - An economic slowdown in China is taking a toll on a growing number of companies, with a series of profit warnings highlighting how weakness in the world's second-largest economy is hitting earnings and rattling investors across the board.

Shareholders of GOME Electrical , China's No.2 home appliance retailer, said at the company's annual general meeting on Thursday that they were concerned about the impact of a China slowdown on the company's sales.

"The management admitted that sales have been affected by a slowdown in economic growth, but they didn't clearly say if a recovery will come or things will be steady for the rest of the year," said Calvin Tan, a director of investment at Ma & Wong Asset Management.

GOME's shares, which have plunged 44 percent so far this year, closed down nearly 4 percent at HK$0.98 on Thursday, their lowest level since October 2008, lagging a 0.8 percent drop in the benchmark Hang Seng Index <.hsi>.

"It is too late for us to sell the shares and we don't know how long we have to keep the stock," said a GOME shareholder who left in the middle of the meeting and declined to be named.

The concerns over GOME come after shares of China Resources Cement Holdings closed down 5.5 percent on Thursday after it warned of a sharp fall in first-half earnings as selling prices for cement products have fallen.

China's central bank cut its policy rates in June for the first time since the global financial crisis as data for April and May suggested growth was weakening more than previously thought.

Many economists have cut their forecasts since May and say second-quarter growth could be just over 7 percent, which would be the weakest pace of expansion since the global economic crisis.

A Reuters poll in May showed a consensus forecast for full-year growth in 2012 of 8.2 percent, which would be the slowest pace of growth since 1999.

"The worst is yet to come," said Paul Tang, chief economist at the Bank of East Asia . "The impact could be reflected in the third quarter before some sign of improvement. That is why there is an urgent need for the Chinese government to launch some supportive measures."

RETAIL SALES SLIDE

A clampdown on China's property sector by policymakers has weighed on GOME and its bigger rival, Suning , seen by some as China's answer to Best Buy , as spending on appliances has eased.

"Sales simply fell miserably this year, at least 30 percent down from last year, in terms of refrigerators and laundry machines," said a sales assistant at a GOME store in China who would only give her surname Zhang as she was not authorized to speak to the media.

Indeed, home appliance sales rose just 0.5 percent in May from a year earlier, underperforming a 13.8 percent increase in overall retail sales, government data shows.

"It's also related to the slowdown in new apartment purchases, because as soon as you buy an apartment, you need to buy a new refrigerator, washing machine and such," said Bruno Lannes, Shanghai-based head of Bain & Company's retail and consumer products practice for Greater China.

China's property investment grew 18.5 percent in the first five months from a year earlier, down from an annual rise of 27.9 percent for the full year of 2011 and 33.2 percent in 2010.

Some Suning staff shrugged off concerns of a slowdown.

"The tightening policy only has minimal impact on our sales. Even though a household is restricted to one or two homes, the total transactions are still huge and people's demand for home appliances is strong," said Xiao Yuanfu, a sales manager at Suning who joined the company in 2004.

High-end products have also come under pressure.

Zhang Yuping, executive chairman of Hengdeli Holdings Ltd , China's top luxury watch retailer, told Reuters earlier this month that an uncertain economic environment had slowed sales growth of luxury watches on the mainland this year.

"On the industry front, a trend of slower demand for high-end products is expected this year, with sales of Cartier and Rolex already seen slowing," Zhang said.

Caterpillar Inc , the world's largest heavy machinery maker, warned of weakness this month and said it was scaling back production in China to reflect a slowdown in the industry.

Caterpillar rival Sany Heavy Industry said on Thursday it might delay its planned Hong Kong initial public offering of shares if market conditions remained weak. It filed for a $2 billion listing, Thomson Reuters publication IFR reported in May.

Sany's group president was, however, optimistic for the company's sales in the second half.

"The second half of this year will be better than the second half of last year," said Sany's president, Tang Xiuguo, adding this was because he did not expect further tightening policies.

Nora Ephron Didn't Feel Limited By Romantic Comedies

'I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want,' late writer/director tells MTV News in 2009.

No matter how it happens, when or where, it is always sad to hear of the passing of a celebrated, talented and respected public figure like Academy Award-nominated screenwriter, director and playwright Nora Ephron, who died of pneumonia at age 71 on Tuesday (June 26).

Ephron is best known for writing and/or directing some of Hollywood's most famous and successful romantic comedies like "When Harry Met Sally ... ," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." Her final film as writer and director was 2009's "Julie & Julia," and during the promotion for that film, which starred Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, Ephron revealed to MTV News that although she was happy to be known for her romantic comedies, she also dabbled in a few politically charged subjects that had yet to be made into feature films.

"You should see my closet, it's full of political scripts," Ephron revealed, adding that while she'd love to see one of her many political scripts turned into a film, she wasn't holding out hope that Hollywood would let her take a turn from romantic comedies to political dramedies.

"Forget it," Ephron said of wanting to direct one of her political scripts. "I mean yes, but the [movies] you get made are not necessarily all the things you write."

When asked if she felt at all limited by being most well-known for her expertise in the rom-com genre, Ephron said she felt nothing but gratitude for how much her successful romantic comedies have done in providing her with the freedom to explore other unrelated subjects.

"I'm not complaining about any box that I'm in, because I can write whatever I want," Ephron said with sincerity. "Fortunately, I'm not just in the movie business, so I don't feel that the only way I can express myself is by the movies I make."

Share your condolences for Ephron's family and friends in the comments below.

Nuts From the Family Tree: Big Family Secrets

When Uncle Tuck found out that Mom was doing genealogy he told her, you might not like what you find out! Now Mom is way cool about family scandals... she doesn't care what the ancestors did as long as her brood stay out of trouble;)

Mom didn't think much about what Uncle Tuck said because he wasn't specific, but it did seem to her that there were secrets to be had if one looked hard enough. Some time went by and Mom discovered what Uncle Tuck was talking about. It looked like her great grandfather, Samuel Albert House was illegitimate!

After due research Mom wrote this in her Notes in Family Tree Maker:

"Samuel Albert House was born ot of wedlock to Rebecca House. There is every indication that his father was Isaac Biggerstaff.

Two reasons for this thought being that the 1850 cenus of Morgan Co.,W.Va. has a Samuel Biggerstaff living with Rebecca House Caton. His age is 16. Samuel was born 11 Feb 1832.

The other reason was that in his death certificate his daughter, my grandmother, listed his father as Issac House and his mother as Rebecca Biggerstaff but in that time period there was no Issac House and no Rebecca Biggerstaff in the Morgan Co. W,Va. area where he was born. There was a Rebecca House and an Issac Biggerstaff."

OK, so there you go. Big-deal family secret: Who da baby-daddy? All evedince points to Isaac Biggerstaff. Samuel Albert is even?going by?Samuel Biggerstaff in the 1850 US Census. And if you look at all the available male Biggerstaffs in Magnolia, West Virginia at that time, it?points to Isaac.

So that's our starting point. I don't know what it is about all this?but I smelled a really interesting story here beyond the usual who-slept-with-who tale. I have also just been back east to visit Mom and we all went to Magnolia, West Virginia, or what's left of it. The recent placing of my feet on the very soil of my ancestors back in the deep woods of West Virginia got me thinking.
(See posting below at http://nutsfromthefamilytree.blogspot.com/2012/06/let-me-take-you-to-magnolia.html?)

I have a big basket of information, random facts and thoughts surrounding this issue. So here in the best order I can make of it is what I know, or think I know. Please, feel free to jump in with thoughts and ideas about this saga. I'd love some help here:)

The Biggerstaffs were a landed family. Isacc's grandfather William left numerous acres of land to Isaac in his will of which I have a copy. Isaac also enjoyed additional?land through inheritance from his father, Samuel. Isaac was land wealthy. The Houses on the other hand were, as Mom likes to put it, dirt poor. He did marry Elizabeth Longstreth who came from a prominent Pennsylvania family.
Thought: The marriage of Isaac to Rebecca House would not have been a good match in the eyes of the Biggerstaff family, especially Isaac's grandfather, William, from whom he stood to inherit. Did his grandfather step in?

Isaac Biggerstaff's first child in his marriage was named "Rebecca". Interestingly, this first child in his mariage to Elizabeth Longstreth arrived just about the time Rebecca House gave birth to Samuel Albert. We can conclude that?Rebecca House and Isaac Biggerstaff were intimate right up the time he was married.
Thought: It's not unheard of back in this place and time for couples to get pregnant so as to force the parents to give them a blessing. Heck, my great grandparents did it because she was from a Lutheran family and he a Catholic family. They had to have a couple of kids to get the parents to cave:)

Rebecca and Isaac's child was named "Samuel". Samuel was Isaac's father's name.
Thought: Was this an effort to curry favor with the landed grandfather of Isaac by honoring Isaac's father?

Rebecca House married Patrick Caton one month after Isaac Biggerstaff died. Rebecca House waited 12 years to marry and did so only after Issac's death on 24 March 1844. She married Patrick Caton, a man from Ireland, on 13 April, 1844.
Thought: Mom thinks that Rebecca and Isaac were true lovers and that she did not want to marry anyone else. Only after Isaac was finally gone did she feel free to mary.

Early 1900s House Family Reunion. In the early years of the 1900s and before 1910 there was a House Family Reunion in Ohio. Mom has a copy of the memories shared there and written down by all in attendance. It resided, gathering dust, in Mary's attic until one day Mary said to Mom, Hey you want to come over and see those old papers in my attic? You don't need to ask Mom a question like that twice:) She borrowed and copied them. In the papers of the House Family Reunion someone stated that?it was commonly known?that Samuel Albert House's father was Issac Biggerstsaff.

Isaac and Rebecca were possibly first cousins, once removed. Mom and I need to verify this but it looks like it could be correct. Yeah... it's West Virginia;)

Lords of the Rings: Oldest Tree Species on Earth
Trees are among the oldest living organisms on the planet. Some individual trees have lived for several thousand years, and connected groves of trees can sometimes live for tens of thousands of years. Living that long requires a combination of steady climate, solitude, luck and of course, genetics. Some tree species consistently outlive the others. Based on tree rings (which form at the rate of one per year), these are the longest-lived tree species.

NPD: 70% Of Consumers Now Watch TV On Non-TV Devices; PCs Reign Supreme

tv ipadSome well-timed research out from NPD, just in time for Google gearing up for its I/O event, where it is announcing news about Google TV, new wireless devices and Android. The researchers say that TV consumption on devices other than TVs has more than doubled in the last year in the 14 markets that it surveys, with 70 percent of consumers now saying they watch video on devices other than TVs. The device leading the charge -- or change, as the case may be? PCs, with tablets still accounting for less than 15 percent of TV consumption. TV, meanwhile, still ranks as the single most-used device for watching television, accounting for the other 30 percent of TV viewing.

Don't Stop Writing Articles Because of Google Penguin | | Razworks ...

The Google Penguin algorithm update is nothing to worry about if you continue writing articles naturally, and without endless keyword repetition. The update has been designed to catch out those relying on ?black hat? web-spamming techniques to boost their rankings, and not those that have gained their ranking position fairly and honestly.

A search engine?s clients are those using it to find information, and Google is only trying to improve that service for its customers ? and by assisting the search engine to achieve this you can take a big step towards a good ranking. Google is not particularly targeting poor quality content here, although you will suffer if your page text is full of unnecessary instances of your keywords. What concerns Google is the source of the links back to your website, and the anchor text you use that people click onto reach your individual web pages.

So that?s it basically ? how to keep the Google Penguin algorithm update happy. To be more specific:

Your Web Page Content

Keep writing articles, but keep it natural and avoid keyword spamming. The Google Penguin update has been designed to detect what is known as webspam, a component of which is keyword stuffing ? trying to influence spider algorithms by excessive use of a keyword in an article or web page content.

You should work to a maximum of around 1% keyword density. The more discerning article directories apply a keyword limit to your submitted articles. Ezine Articles for example applies a 2% limit ? that includes similar terms, such as ?article writing,? ?writing articles,? and ?write articles? all being regarded as the same keyword; even ?articles? would be read as a keyword.

I would suggest using a keyword density of no more than 1%, if that. 2% should be regarded as a top figure.

Taking ?golf balls? as an example of a keyword you are using on a page in a golfing site, you would use the word ?golf? in terms such as ?golf shoes,? ?golf apparel? and many others. The algorithm has no idea of your intended keyword, so it will list what it believes appropriate from the semantics of your page. It will take ?golf? as a keyword and, if that exceeds a certain figure (nobody but Google knows what that is), your page is liable to be dropped a few places in the rankings for any of its keywords.

So write naturally and don?t worry about keyword density, other than to keep it low, although not so low that the main topic is lost. Forget numbers in your article writing, and write naturally and sensibly ? as if you were speaking to the person reading your article.

Your Anchor Text

Many people use the same anchor text in their links time after time. Mix it up: when you are writing your resource, box or creating in-text links that readers can click, it makes sense to use your primary keyword or phrase as the anchor text (the text that is highlighted as a link). Avoid the use of the same keyword or phrase all the time. If your website focuses on article writing or article marketing, avoid the temptation to keep repeating the word ?article? in the text.

You can employ a number of alternative words, such as dissertation, essay, passage, content, copy and so on.? Synonyms can often be difficult to find, particularly those meaning exactly the same in the same context, so if you are stuck for alternatives, check out an online thesaurus such as Thesaurus.com and you will find a whole host of them. You may lose the benefit of links back to your web pages if Google Penguin calculates your links as being over-repetitive (an algorithm is a mathematical formula and hence does not use human values).

Your Linking Strategy

The Google Penguin update looks for a diverse source for the links leading back to your web pages. Your search engine listing position will suffer if large numbers of backlinks come from the same website or from a recognized links farm. The same is true if your links are predominantly from poor quality web pages and pages not directly connected with the topic of those to which they link.

Mix your links between different sources, and also different types of source. For example, don?t have all your articles published on the same article directory. Make as sure as you can that the links leading back to your website (backlinks) are not all from the same source ? or even similar sources, but are mixed between different article and web directories, Squidoo lenses, forums, blogs, private web pages, etc.. Make sure your links come from multiple sources.

So, if you avoid excessive keyword repetition, vary your anchor text and mix the source of your backlinks up, you can kick the penguin in the rear end and tell it to get lost. Google?s purpose is to provide its clients with a good search experience ? the search engine is not particularly trying to punish you ? and the Google Penguin update is how it is achieving that. So keep writing
articles!

Racial make-up of community impacts obesity risk

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

The racial and ethnic composition of a community is associated with the obesity risk of individuals living within the community, according to a study led by researchers at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The findings, published in the June 14 edition of the American Journal of Public Health, may help explain disparities in obesity rates among racial groups and point to some of the environmental factors that may contribute to obesity in the United States.

For the study, the researchers analyzed data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, which represented a cross-section of the U.S. population. The data were matched with geographical information from the U.S. Census. Obesity was calculated based on each study participant's body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight in relation to height.

Analysis of the data found that community ethnic composition might affect residents' likelihood of being obese, and the effect varied by the residents' own ethnicity, for example, living in a community with a Hispanic population of 25 percent or greater was associated with 21 percent higher odds for obesity for Hispanics in that community. Non-Hispanic whites had 23 percent higher odds for obesity living in the same community.

The opposite was true for communities with high concentrations of non-Hispanic Asians. In those communities, the odds for obesity were 28 percent lower for non-Hispanic whites in those communities. While non-Hispanic blacks have the highest rates of obesity in U.S., living in a community with a high concentration of non-Hispanic blacks did not raise the odds of obesity even among non-Hispanic blacks.

"Obesity is one of the nation's most pressing health problems, and our findings suggest that community characteristics related to racial and ethnic composition may have an important effect on residents' weight," said James B. Kirby, PhD, of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, who was the lead author of the study. "This study will enhance understanding of the disparities in the U.S. obesity epidemic and how certain racial and ethnic minorities are disproportionately affected."

"Social and built environments play an important role in influencing individuals' health outcomes including obesity. Future research needs to better understand the mechanisms, but clearly interventions are needed to reduce obesity disparities in the United States," said Youfa Wang, MD, PhD, MS, coauthor of the study and director of the Johns Hopkins Global Center on Childhood Obesity and Associate Professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The Month of Man | inweekly

A Closer Look at Men?s Health
By Jennie McKeon

June is National Safety Month, National Candy Month and National Dairy Month?the list is long. But more importantly, June is National Men?s Health Month.

Most men generally avoid the doctor. Whether it?s from lack of time management or fear, the stereotype is confirmed by doctors everywhere.

?It?s very true,? said Dr. Eric Hazbun, a board certified family physician at Sacred Heart. ?Part of the reason is because they feel invulnerable?kind of like ?I don?t want to stop and ask for directions.??

Some men also adhere to the ?if it?s not broke, don?t fix it? motto.

?We tend to see issues that should?ve been addressed earlier,? Hazbun said.

That?s why the Men?s Health Network, a non-profit organization, provides men (and their concerned family) with information about free clinics, screening guidelines and tips to raise awareness in your local community.

?The stereotype exists, because it is reality, a fact that men do avoid doctors,? said Kimaya Dixit, communications associate at Men?s Health Network. ?Men are taught from their childhood that big and tough boys don?t cry.?

Healthy Guidelines

Preventing major health issues isn?t always as time consuming or invasive as one might think. Young adult men (and women) should make appointments for cholesterol by the age of 20 and after that only every five years, the same for diabetic screenings.

Multi-vitamins are recommended, but certainly not a cure-all. Preventative screenings and looking out for your overall wellness is important at every age, however it is typically middle age that the human body starts to need more upkeep, meaning you can?t put it off any longer. And men are no exception to the rule.

?If someone is in very good health, it is age 40 that they would typically need to start seeing the doctor yearly,? said Hazbun. ?By that age you start to see the problems of middle age?prostate cancer, colon cancer.?

Even doctors have to see a doctor.

?I?m 39,? Hazbun said. ?I?m not looking forward to next year.?

Once men hit that magic number, 50, they need to begin prostate cancer screenings. African-American males, for reasons that are undetermined, are at a higher risk for prostate cancer than white males. It is even less common in Hispanic, Asian, Pacific Islander and Native American men. The screening process is either a digital rectal exam (DRE) or prostate specific antigen test (PSA).

?Men should get rectal exams, PSAs and colonoscopies every year after 50,? Hazbun said.

DREs and colonoscopies may not be pleasant, but they could be lifesaving.

?A lot of men are very reluctant, they think ?I?m not sticking a camera??? Hazbun said. ?But colon cancer is the second leading cancer-related cause of death.?

Males are also at risk for heart disease, which Hazbun said doctors fight on a daily basis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Men and women of all ages and backgrounds can develop the condition. Getting your cholesterol checked and checking your blood pressure every five years after 25, the same for sugar, will help maintain heart health.

There is no one screening to determine if someone has heart disease, instead it is up to the individual to see their doctor and discuss any and all abnormalities.

?The symptoms related to heart disease are chest pain and tightness. Those symptoms need to be evaluated,? Hazbun said.

Don?t Be Afraid

Doctors are not mind readers, asking questions is key to making the most of your doctor visits, especially for men who wish to keep those visits few and far between.

?Male patients will tell me, ?I?m here because of my knee pain,? and after the visit, I?ll walk to the door and they?ll say ?Oh, by the way doc,?? said Hazbun.

That last minute question is usually related to erectile dysfunction.

?Erectile dysfunction is usually a sign that something else is going wrong and could be linked to prostate issues or even heart disease if they?re not getting adequate blood flow to the penis,? Hazbun said. ?Shame can keep people from finding major issues.?

Dr. Ken Mitchell has spent his past five years as a doctor focusing on weight loss and wellness. He also treats menopausal and andropausal patients with hormone therapy.

Andropause isn?t as common of a term as menopause, and that may be because men go through andropause at a gradual rate or maybe it?s because they aren?t open enough about the changes they go through in mid-life.

?They don?t hang out and talk about personal issues,? Mitchell said.

Mitchell said andropause can cause a decrease in energy, interest and memory.

?There?s no mojo, no get up and go,? Mitchell said.

Mitchell?s answer to men who get past the embarrassment of bringing up the subject is testosterone replacement through creams, gels and shots, which have the most lasting effect.

?It?s not mainstream medicine and the risks are minimal,? Mitchell said. ?You can replace testosterone and you can do it safely.?

Testosterone levels range from 2 to 800, the average middle aged man should be at about 500 Mitchell said. With the hormone therapy, men receive a boost of 800 giving them a blast of energy. However, there?s not a huge market for it.

?I have a high no-show rate,? Mitchell said. ?They?re tough sales.?

?It?s a story about nutrition?

Whenever you ask a physician about wellness?whether it?s male or female?you?re not going to be able to dodge the ?eat right, exercise? lecture. It?s the number one advice for anyone seeking to map out a wellness plan.

?Exercise helps prevent, across the board, every disease even cancer,? Hazbun said. ?Exercise and diet is the bottom line.?

Thirty to 40 minutes of exercise and a diet rich in fiber, 20-25 grams per day, is recommended. For specific guidelines, Hazbun suggests the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet, which you can find at nih.gov.

Exercise is important for bodies of all ages, but Lorenzo Aguilar, head fitness trainer at Anytime Fitness, points out, after 25 it?s even more important.

?Generally in males, and females, around 25 is when metabolism begins to slow down,? he said. ?Every 10 years it slows down another 10 percent due to muscle atrophy.?

Whether the belly is full of beer or burgers, men tend to store most of their fat in the midsection.

?It?s not good,? said Aguilar of the beer gut. ?It?s visceral fat. It lives in the organs and releases toxins.?

There is no quick fix, drinkers could sip wine and skip high calorie mixed drinks, but some work has to be done.? Aguilar recommends exercises like overhead squats, pull ups, planks, and back extension to help muscle imbalances.

?A lot of guys have back pain,? Aguilar said. ?They should focus on postural and core exercises, abs, butt and shoulders. As men age, these stabilizer muscles ten to atrophy first, which cause muscle imbalances. Once you have proper alignment, then you can work on chest and biceps. You get a better benefit.?

Aguilar points out, that men tend to skip the recommended 30-minute cardio after their 30-minute strength and core training.

?Very few males do enough cardio,? he said.

Encourage Women to Encourage Men

When the facts aren?t enough to get men to be more active in taking care of themselves, women are called in for reinforcement.

?We encourage women to expand on their traditional role as the family?s health care leader and activist for enhancement of health care services,? Dixit said. ?Women are the ones who can get men to the doctors offices as they schedule appointments and push their husbands, sons, brothers, fathers, etc.?

Men?s health isn?t about forcing someone to do something they should do, but more about ensuring that loved ones are healthier, and therefore around much longer.

?Men?s health to us should mean healthier, fuller, longer and happier lives for our brothers, husbands, fathers, grandfathers, uncles and sons,? Dixit said.
