Japan deflation persists, industrial output falls

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's core consumer price index fell 0.4 percent in April from a year earlier, while industrial production also weakened, the government reported Friday.

The data offer scant evidence of a rebound, though officials say the economy is on the cusp of a recovery and should show stronger gains by midyear.

Industrial production fell 2.3 percent from a year earlier though it was up a seasonally adjusted 1.7 percent from the month before. The strongest gains were in autos and other transport equipment and in electronic components and devices, according to the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Trade.

Despite recent turmoil in financial markets, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to persist in aggressive monetary easing and stimulus spending aimed at helping Japan break out of deflation, or falling prices, that has contributed to two decades of economic stagnation.

"No action, no growth," he declared to a group of economic experts gathered this week in Tokyo to assess his "Abenomics" policies.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index was trading 2.1 percent higher early Friday after tumbling 5.2 percent the day before, as investors responded to retreats in other major markets.

Abe characterized recent market gyrations as "routine financial phenomena."

"We must not allow ourselves to be distracted and intimidated by the crisis conditions we face," said economy minister Akira Amari.

Though the Nikkei remains around 30 percent higher for the year, boosted by optimism over the Bank of Japan's unprecedented monetary easing, it's down 13 percent from its peak on May 22, reflecting doubt over whether the government's economic strategy can extricate the country from years of economic malaise.

The prospect of more yen in circulation, which is intended to boost inflation, has weighed on the currency. The yen has fallen sharply to the relief of the country's exporters and that weakening is pushing up prices, in yen terms, for imported crude oil and other commodities. That is expected to help the central bank eventually reach its target of 2 percent inflation within the next two years.

But apart from a 4.2 percent increase in utilities costs, many other prices remained lower in April, the Management and Coordination Agency reported. It said the overall CPI, including food and energy prices, fell 0.7 percent from a year earlier as costs for vegetables, education and entertainment, fell, but rose 0.3 percent from the month before. Core inflation, excluding food prices, also rose 0.3 percent from a year earlier.

Japan's unemployment rate remained flat, at 4.1 percent, despite the government's insistence that Abe's policies are improving labor and wage conditions.

Without a strong improvement in incomes, which have been declining, any recovery in the consumer spending needed to help boost demand and sustain the recovery will be short-lived, economists say.

"Wage increases need to be realized in the labor market," said Kenji Umetani of the Cabinet's Economic and Social Research Institute. "This increase will be realized only if the expectation of future income growth is strengthened and holds."

New gene delivery method: Magnetic nanoparticles

May 30, 2013 ? Stent angioplasty saves lives, but there often are side effects and complications related to the procedure, such as arterial restenosis and thrombosis. In the June 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, however, scientists report that they have discovered a new nanoparticle gene delivery method that may overcome current limitations of gene therapy vectors and prevent complications associated with the stenting procedure. Specifically, this strategy uses stents as a platform for magnetically targeted gene delivery, where genes are moved to cells at arterial injury locations without causing unwanted side effects to other organs.

Additionally, magnetic nanoparticles developed and characterized in the study also protect genes and help them reach their target in active form, which also is one of the key challenges in any gene therapy.

"This study can help address a number of barriers to translation of experimental gene therapeutic approaches to clinical practice," said Michael Chorny, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Division of Cardiology at the Abramson Pediatric Research Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania. "Bringing gene therapy closer to clinical use is a step toward developing safer and more effective ways for treating cardiovascular disease."

To make this technique possible, Chorny and colleagues used in vitro vascular cells to demonstrate the ability to effectively deliver genes using biocompatible nanoparticles and magnetic force without causing adverse effects. Although effective gene transfer in these cells has been difficult to achieve historically, this study demonstrated that magnetically guided "gene-impregnated" nanoparticles delivered their cargo effectively, especially compared to conventional gene delivery vectors. Next, researchers explored magnetically targeted gene delivery by applying these nanoparticles to stented arteries in rats. The nanoparticle-mediated expression of stent-targeted genes was shown to be greatly enhanced in treated animals when compared to control groups treated with nanoparticles without using the magnetic conditions, or with an equivalent dose of a conventional gene delivery vector. Genes delivered using the magnetically targeted nanoparticles were also expressed at considerably higher levels in the stented arteries compared to other organs and tissues.

"This approach is novel and exciting, and goes to show that investments in basic science across disciplines pay off in time," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "When the first nanoparticles were developed and when the first correctable human disease gene was identified, no one could have ever known that these two advances would come together in a way that might one-day save lives."

Are you are interested in financial success from? a home based business, either as a second income, or are looking to eventually do it full time? Here are a few things to consider before you begin.

(1) Why are you doing the home based business? Having your why is going to fuel you on the journey, when new challenges arise, knowing why will help you deal with it rather then giving up. It may be a daunting task if you are really busy, but you will gain so much by taking that hour to do a little soul searching and finding your why. It will help your mindset? and also give you focus, as you build your home based business for success.Whether it is to pay of your home, or to have more time as a family without sacrificing your income.

(2) Do you need to learn the skills of marketing in order to have success? If you do check out what the companies are offering, and try and get as much information on what they will be teaching you.

There are companies that tell what you need to do to have success, but do not show you enough how to do it. If you are new to online marketing, becoming savy at marketing is a skill that needs to be learned, and once you do so many doors open for you. One lesson I have learned, is to check out the company first by doing your own research. One company that I got involved with to learn marketing, I got caught up in the hype because there was a lot of people joining.Once I got involved I realized that the $25.00 a month they were advertising was not giving me the information I needed to learn, so I up graded to $100.00. There was great inspiration there but it was not marketing skills been taught.

They advised to upgrade with all the other products to really become successful, which I did not mind but I wanted to be cautious this time so I talked to a few other people who had bought all the products, and they informed me that it really did not go into enough detail to help a person learn.I am not saying that they are not helping people because I learned a lot, however not enough to be able to make my marketing work. The 100.00 a month was more on inspiration, then the actual marketing information.

Everyone is blogging on the one blogging platform which gives us more recognition by the search engines which equals more traffic, which equals more income. The? company that I joined gives another bonus and that is rather then having a picture of the owner up there, he has each person's blog there so you get front page exposure as an added bonus to help with your home based business success.

(5) If you choose a company that teaches you the marketing, you will also have the opportunity to market other products, and services in your home based business as well. Again do your homework as to what you would like to market. I had been involved with a few network marketing companies before and had a few products I really believe in. If you choose ones you are passionate about, you will have an easier time promoting them. I personally like the idea of promoting a higher ticket item that I believe in, as well as a lower ticket item. This way when I am marketing, I am really leveraging my time that I put into a blog or a video, or some other form of marketing.

(6)This is one thing I remind myself daily as I learn, and that is to be patient, and realize that the success, for my home based business, is having the mindset that, although it may not take? a lot of time, it is going to take time. One thing that helps me with that is I enjoy it so much that it really does not feel like work. The Magazine switches owners from Marco Arment to Glenn Fleishman, gets all-star support team

Marco Arment's The Magazine is now Glenn Fleishman's. That's right, the former executive editor is the new owner, and he's assembled an all-star team to help him continue The Magazine's mission going forward. From the press release:

"Marco gave me an incredible amount of freedom in editing The Magazine, and I'm happy to add the role of publisher as it develops further," Fleishman said. Writer and editor Brittany Shoot has been retained as The Magazine's managing editor.

Aperiodical has already contracted several firms to update and extend the Web site's and app's design and programming. Design and interaction company Pacific Helm worked with Arment to design the app, worked on previous iterations of the Web site, and created each of the issue covers. They will continue in those roles.

Guy English and Chris Parrish of Aged & Distilled will handle iOS app development. They recently released the Napkin app for Mac OS X. Jessica Simmons of Simmons Ardell, formerly of sister design firms Milton Glaser Inc and WBMG, has signed on to design an upcoming print collection drawn from both the first 100 articles appearing in The Magazine and newly commissioned work. Dean Putney, one of the main developers behind top blog BoingBoing, will manage improvements on the Web site.

Fleishman plans to add a regular podcast of interviews with authors and their subjects. The podcast will include sponsorships handled by Lex Friedman, of the podcast-advertising network Podlexing. A revision of the Web site will launch June 1, followed in the near future by an update to the iOS app with user-requested features.

That's a hell of a lot of amazing talent, and the caliber of writers has been just as phenomenal since launch. The Magazine is already great, and I can't wait to see how they make it even better.

Arment also sold Instapaper to Betaworks a few weeks ago, and while no longer with the company, he was also the original developer behind Tumblr, which just sold to Yahoo! Since Arment isn't someone to suffer boredom easily or for long, it'll be interesting to see what he creates next. For now, you can find his blog at Marco.org and his podcast at ATP.fm.

In the meantime, congrats to all involved!

Former Saab chairman to be questioned in Swedish tax inquiry

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Former Saab Chairman Victor Muller will be called in to answer questions related to a Swedish inquiry into alleged tax offences at the bankrupt carmaker, the country's Economic Crime Authority said on Tuesday.

Muller, chief executive of the Spyker sports-car group that bought Saab from General Motors in 2010, is not suspected of wrongdoing.

"The Gothenburg district attorney has confirmed that Mr Muller is not a suspect and may be invited for an interview after summer, possibly in October," Spyker said in a statement.

Prosecutors are looking into allegations that executives at Saab, which collapsed in 2011, obstructed proper tax checks over the years 2010 to 2011.

The period being examined was a turbulent time for the company, taking in its sale by General Motors and subsequent emergence of problems that led to its collapse.

Katinka Wall, a spokeswoman at the Swedish Economic Crime Authority, confirmed that Muller would be summoned as part of the wider investigation and that he is not being served as a suspect.

She declined to provide further details.

Swedish prosecutors last week questioned Saab's former Chief Executive Jan-Ake Jonsson and two other executives as part of its tax investigation.
