Testicular cancer risk tripled in boys whose testes fail to descend

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Boys whose testes have not descended at birth -- a condition known as cryptorchidism -- are almost three times as likely to develop testicular cancer in later life, finds an analysis of the available evidence published online in Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The findings prompt the authors to ask whether boys with the condition should be regularly monitored to lessen the potential risk

Cryptorchidsim, where testes fail to descend into the scrotum and are retained within the abdomen, is the most common birth defect in boys, affecting around 6% of newborns.

The authors trawled the Embase and Medline databases for studies, which looked at the potential link between cryptorchidism as an isolated abnormality and testicular cancer risk, and which had been published between January 1980 and December 2010.

They found 735 relevant papers, published in English, among which 12 studies matched the inclusion criteria and covered corrective surgery (orchidopexy).

The haul included 9 case-control studies, involving 2281 cases of testicular cancer, which had been diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 75 between 1965 and 2006, and 4811 controls.

And it included 3 cohort studies, which regularly monitor similar groups of people over the long term to see what happens to them.

These studies involved more than 2 million boys whose health was tracked for a cumulative period of 58 million person years. Boys with cryptorchidism who developed testicular cancer totalled 345.

Boys with cryptorchidism in the case-control group were almost 2.5 times as likely to develop testicular cancer as those without the condition.

And those in the cohort studies were almost 4 times as likely to develop the disease if their testes had not descended at birth.

The authors calculated that, on the basis of the two sets of figures, boys with isolated cryptorchidism are almost three times as likely to develop testicular cancer in later life.

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged between 20 and 45, and rates have increased substantially worldwide over the past few decades, the authors point out.

In the UK, the number of new cases almost doubled between 1975-7 and 2006-8, rising from 3.4/100 000 men to 6.9/100 000.

"Many important unanswered questions remain, such as how laterality, degree of descent, and surgical correction affect the malignant potential of the [undescended] testis," write the authors.

And they add: "The most poignant question this study raises, however, is whether the risk of malignant transformation is sufficiently significant to warrant regular follow-up, as is the case with other premalignant states."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Reflecting a war-weary nation, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday for an accelerated withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan after more than a decade of fighting.

The strong bipartisan vote of 62-33 sends a clear message to President Barack Obama and the military as they engage in high-stakes talks about the pace of drawing down the 68,000 U.S. troops, with a White House announcement expected within weeks.

Although the vote was on a nonbinding amendment to a defense policy bill, its significance could not be discounted amid the current discussions.

Thirteen Republicans, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, the top GOP lawmaker on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, backed the measure.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., its chief sponsor, argued that al-Qaida is stronger in other parts of the world and that nation-building in Afghanistan has gone off track. His measure endorsed Obama's timetable to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014 but pressed for a quicker pace, without specifying how that would be achieved.

"It is time to end this war, end the longest war in United States history," Merkley said during Senate debate.

The overall bill authorizes $631 billion for weapons, ships, aircraft and a 1.7 percent pay raise for military personnel. The White House threatened to veto the legislation in its current form, citing limits on the president's authority in handling detainees at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and restrictions on cuts to the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

The Senate hopes to wrap up its version of the bill by week's end. It then would have to be reconciled with the legislation the House passed in May. The House bill calls for Obama to maintain a force of at least 68,000 troops through the end of 2014.

The Senate eliminated one provision that had attracted White House objections. In a strong bipartisan vote Wednesday, the Senate voted to allow Pentagon investment in alternative fuels.

Brad Pitt: Fatherhood Has Made Me a Better Man - iVillage

Brad Pitt is many things: an actor, a humanitarian, a father and a soon-to-be husband (again). But for the Killing Them Softly star, the role of dad might just be the most important.

Pitt -- who has six kids with fiancee Angelina Jolie -- admits in the new issue of People that fatherhood makes him a better man. "Absolutely," he says when asked, adding that being a dad "takes you right off yourself."

His children were the initial reason that he agreed to get married to Jolie. However, the 48-year-old has admitted that he and Jolie have realized that marriage means a lot to them, as well. The Pitt-Jolie family hasn't yet announced a wedding date, but he says they plan to "keep it simple" and invite "just family."

"It's been a family type of year, a down-home type of year," Pitt says. "Mama's [Jolie] worked more. And quite frankly I've really enjoyed it."

Pitt is only a little over a year away from turning 50, and he admits that it's something that he's thinking about. Though he's as successful as ever, Pitt says he's going to start treasuring each moment he has now that he's getting older.

"This is what I think about: 'Okay, you're way over the mid-point [of your life]. You don't know how much time you have left,' " he says. "I want to enjoy this year more than ever."

iraqi news: orpitasingh: Horse Racing History | recreation and sports

The sport of horse racing goes back a long, long way. It goes back to circa 4,500 BC when nomadic Central Asian tribes domesticated horses for the first time. Ever after, horse-racing has reigned supreme as a sport fit for Kings.

From the beginning of recorded history, horse racing has been depicted as an organised and popular sport common to all of the world's major civilizations. The Olympic Games of ancient Greece featured events involving both mounted and chariot racing. The sport was then taken up by the Romans. Mounted and chariot horse racing became major areas of enterprise in Roman Empire days; these events were the product of breeding programs with imported bloodlines and extensive training programs. Horseracing had all elements of legalized betting like bookies, proper racing tracks, hit tips, scandals and, red hot entertainment and excitement. Horse racing saw a decline that coincided with the Roman Empire's decline. It began to pick up speed once more once mankind was well into a more modern era.

Horse racing took a professional turn as long ago as the twelfth century, when English Crusader knights came back in the company of Arab horses. This set off a trend that lasted for the forthcoming period of hundreds of years: more and more Arab stallions were imported for crossing with English mares. The ensuing offspring were a real mix of speed and endurance. These cross bred horses were the forefathers of today's horse racing breeds.

As quantum technological jumps in transport and other fields of human concern took place in the 19th century and later , thousands of people became hooked on watching horse races and gambling on racing horses. Horseracing started to get intensive coverage in distinguished newspapers, and gambling volumes consistently increased. The arrival of organised on-site bookmakers brought along a complete sea change. Random and sometimes illegal, sometimes unethical practices led to a moderately successful Jockey Club effort to establish really high standards of order, discipline and integrity that ensured the sport's continued well being.

All around the world, attendance at race courses has been shooting up right into the early part of this century. There had been a decline in attendance during the 1970s and 1980s. The technology wonder of online web wagering has influenced horse racing in ways never conceived of earlier. Online betting has drawn a completely new generation of spectators and betters to the Game of Kings; they prefer to conduct all of their activities in front of their computers and TV sets. The facility to bet and earn cash legally from the result of horse races has been a core part of this sport's appeal and a major factor behind its survival as a sport with a presence.

Washington wipes out a wolf pack

A gray wolf in trees

Tracy Brooks (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Pacific Region)/Flickr

A gray wolf in trees

A wildlife tragedy began in Washington state on Aug. 7, when the state Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that a wolf in the Wedge Pack had killed a calf on a ranch close to Canada. Afterward, the rancher said that wolves were continuing to kill or maim his cattle. Wildlife staffers examined his claim and acknowledged that 16 animals had been killed or injured.

But this is the real tragedy: By Sept. 27, the entire Wedge Pack of eight wolves had been killed. The collared alpha male, shot from a helicopter, was the last to go. The pack was wiped out because the rancher dug in his heels. He refused to accept any reparation for his losses, insisting instead that the state?s management plan for wolves needed to be rescinded.

Under that plan, ratified in 2011 after nine elaborate public hearings across the state, ranchers may receive payment for two grown beef cattle, in the case of a confirmed wolf kill, or one calf in the case of a probable kill.

The plan also requires ranchers and the agency to attempt all possible non-lethal alternatives before they resort to killing wolves. State wildlife officials urge ?livestock operators to enter into cooperative, cost-sharing agreements with the department that specify non-lethal measures.? State Sen. Kevin Ranker, D, says it?s ?inexcusable? that the state didn't ?exhaust? non-lethal methods first.

Before wolves can be taken off the endangered species list, the plan says, there must be 15 breeding pairs in existence statewide for three years. If the state hopes to reach this goal, it will certainly need to discontinue management by rifle barrel.

State agents now say they are ready to try something called Chemical Bio-scent (a smelly repellent) as a non-lethal measure.? We urge them also to try a tool called Conditioned Taste Aversion, developed by biologist Lowell Nicolaus, which applies worming medicine to cow carcasses to sicken feeding wolves. In classic Pavlovian conditioning, wolves soon learn that eating beef turns their stomachs. Nicolaus has adapted this technique successfully to change the behavior of wild crows and raccoons, and also used it on captive wolves.

Yet the problem with the Wedge Pack is not so much wolves preying on cattle as it is the continued grazing of livestock on our federal estate. Especially during the summer, when the predation is highest, the rancher?s cows graze on public lands. That means American taxpayers pick up some of the tab for his herd. The rancher built his ranch, yes, but not without government help.

Taxpayers subsidize tens of thousands of U.S. cattle each year, and these cattle degrade the same habitats that are required by wolves? native prey. Science shows that cattle ?? an exotic species in the West ?? displace deer, elk, moose and other prey species. Grazing also undercuts sound wolf management efforts.

We believe that money to subsidize cattle grazing would be better spent on wolf recovery ?? restoring the range to the way it was before public-lands ranching became an institution. Ask most fans of outdoor recreation if they would rather watch wild species than cattle in wild areas, and you know what they will say.

Wolves and other large carnivores are keystone species in functioning ecosystems. A study conducted in 2012 by Oregon State University researchers concluded that the absence of carnivores -- wolves especially -- harms the land. Elk herds in Yellowstone, for instance, pruned willows and shrubs far back until gray wolves were reintroduced. An unnatural dearth of large carnivores allows herbivores to disrupt natural checks and balances.

Another scientific line would be to design an interstate, even international, conservation and management plan. Such a plan would consider wolf populations all over the West.

There is a lot at stake for taxpayers. The state?s wildlife agency had to pay employees several weeks of overtime to chase down the Wedge Pack. A helicopter was in the air for four days. Sen. Ranker has asked the department for the final cost, as well as for a study of the comparative costs of lethal and non-lethal methods.

We can hardly wait to see that cost-benefit analysis. Whatever the price in blood, money and mismanaged compassion, this was the result: An entire wolf pack was killed for the sake of one ranch and its rancher.

Wolves in the West are here to stay. They don?t comprehend state and national boundaries, but they understand their role in ecosystems. The Wolf Conservation and Management Plan, the law of the land in Washington for now, is all the wolves have to protect them.

Let?s give the ?conservation? part of the plan a fighting chance.

Your favorite fictional character?

I'm curious as to who everyone's favorite fictional character is, be they from TV, movies, books, games, or comics (or whatever else). Who are they, and what makes them so compelling to you? Certainly, if you have a top five list or something, that's totally an acceptable answer also.

Is DIY In Your DNA? | Fast Horse

I grew up in a very DIY family. My parents built our first home, and I mean they actually built it. There was no hiring out of tough jobs or allowing others to oversee the process; they built a two-story, three-bedroom home from the ground up. My mother hung sheet rock and laid tile all while nine months pregnant with me. She?s a brute.

When I was 10, we moved to town and lived in a home that was built in 1877. My parents gutted the entire thing and, you guessed it, started from scratch so they could DIY. By this time I was accustomed to falling asleep to my father pounding nails or sanding floors, but after a while I just wanted a ?normal? house without an inch of?sheet rock?dust under my feet. I always swore to my parents that I would NEVER live in an unfinished home when I grew up, and would always hire other people to do the work.

My actual floor.

Ha! Fast forward to today and guess what I did all weekend ? sanded our hardwood floors so we could re-stain them. Yep, the DIY bug was not something I could escape from and now I live in a ?fixer upper? and can honestly say that I am proud to be a DIYer.

I have to give props to my ?rents for doing all this DIYing before there was an arsenal of tips and tricks available at their fingertips. When my boyfriend and I encounter a problem, we have the option of quickly looking up a how-to on YouTube or a quick search in Google to help us solve the issue. My favorite way of acquiring information is a good ol? DIY/home improvement blog. I love a good blog. A step-by-step guide to how the average Joe attacks a home improvement project, along with real-life tid bits of information that you only get from messing it up yourself first.

I am such a fan of a certain DIY blog that I recently stood in line for four hours to catch a glimpse of the real people behind my favorite blog, Young House Love. I?ve followed this blog religiously well before I had my own home to renovate, but fell in love with their quirky style and funny home improvement tips enough to check their blog daily (sometimes multiple times a day).

So whether you fancy yourself a?die-hard?home improvement buff like my parents or maybe you reach your limit at painting an accent wall, in today?s DIY-world you will always have a place to find inspiration and guidance. Maybe you will even become so inspired (see Young House Love, I swear you will get hooked) that you will completely change your mind, like me, and decide doing it yourself?isn?t?so bad after all.

3 Steps to a More Secure Password - Legal Productivity

Password Security TipsYour email, social media, bank accounts, credit cards, online stores and so much more are all protected by passwords. Secure, hard-to-hack passwords help to keep your digital life safe from hacking eyes. Here are 3 steps to ramp up your password security.

1. Use a unique email address for passwords only ? Forget your password? No problem, simply enter your email address and the site will send you instructions to reset your password. Of course, if a hacker knows your email address from your website, social networks or information gathering sites, they attack that address and use it to easily access your other password protected sites. Instead create a unique, secure email address for password recovery only.

2. Provide extended answers to security questions ? Another way to retrieve your password is to answer a series of questions, like the city of your birth, your mother?s maiden name (NEVER give this out), or your first pet. This, of course, is easy to crack for people that know you or have access to your history. Instead, give descriptive, but memorable answers. Like ?Chocolate Max? for your dark brown Terrier, or ?Hot and Steamy Rio? for your city of birth. Or choose one unique word or phrase and add it to all of your answers, like ?The Beatles Max?, or ?The Beatles Rio?.

3. A phrase is better than an alpha-numeric password ? The most common passwords are ?password? and ?123456?. You won?t of course, use those, but even that @w3s0me password that you created is not so awesome. Software tools can crack them. Instead, use a phrase, like ?Awes0me Ch33zeburger?.

A secure password helps to keep your digital life safe from prying hackers. Use these three steps to ramp up your password security. Final tip: Use a unique password for each site.

Content is often in demand, so a writer could also work on a freelance basis, obtaining writing jobs from individuals who are no good at it. All you need to do is look for those individuals who have a need, such as content, and supply it for them. Write down a few samples of your work and then do a bit of promoting, and you will be in business.

Online auction web sites are another avenue from which a large number of people are making good money. You can acquire items at wholesale value and sell them at full price, or you may already have products suitable for selling online. Getting your product offers looked at by customers is taken care of for you by places like eBay and other online auction sites. Your job is firstly to figure out a price and list your product, then wait for the sales. Once the buyer makes the purchase, you will receive the payment and then complete the purchase by sending the purchaser their merchandise.

Life is getting a lot easier in lots of ways through the advances in technology. The advent of the pc has put ownership of a business within the reach of ordinary folks. The Internet has everything you need to start a business. It offers access to products you can sell as well as information that shows you how to do it. If you could identify a business model that appeals to you and apply it to your own start-up business, that would be great.

Instead of a fulltime business you could just be after another income stream, which the Internet caters for handsomely. Spend a little time on your computer seeking information on starting an online business, and you will find lots of it. Get started on your research and you could soon begin making some cash.

Where Is Windows Phone 7.8? - Business Insider

Earlier this year, Microsoft and Nokia showed off a new flagship Windows Phone, the Lumia 900.

This was the phone that was finally going to make the Windows Phone OS a viable contender against Apple's iOS and Google's Android, they said. The "smartphone betxa test was over," they said.

A few short months later, we learned the Lumia 900 was dead in the water. Its hardware wasn't compatible with Windows Phone 8, the new version of the operating system that was set to launch in the fall. In short, Lumia 900 owners and owners of other Windows Phones wouldn't be eligible for the latest and greatest features found in Microsoft's best mobile OS to date.?

Luckily, Microsoft promised to keep those people happy with a software update to the older Windows Phones called Windows Phone 7.8. That version is supposed to bring some Windows Phone 8 features like a fully-customizable home screen to the Lumia 900 and other last-generation Windows Phones.?

But with all the attention on the new generation of Windows Phones running Windows Phone 8, a lot of people (including us) completely forgot about Windows Phone 7.8 until Paul Thurrott brought it up this week. The fact that Microsoft hasn't mentioned Windows Phone 7.8 in about five months and its refusal to comment on the update since then is a scary omen that it may never arrive.

Here's Thurrott:

Microsoft, silence is no way to treat early adopters, the people who are your most loyal customers. It is the most disrespectful thing you can do, in fact. Combined with the weird and continued holes in your ecosystem strategy?the inability to get Xbox Video content on Windows Phone 8?as only one obvious example?it?s unclear to me why you think anyone should support you or your mobile platform.

He's right.

Microsoft's intentions were good when it announced Windows Phone 7.8. It clearly didn't want to punish early Windows Phone adopters. But now it just feels like Microsoft was misleading Windows Phone owners to avoid a bunch of complaints. If Windows Phone 7.8 is coming, Microsoft needs to tell its customers when. If it's not coming, Microsoft needs to bite the bullet and admit it can't fulfill its promise.

Anything less would be an insult to those who rushed out and bought a Lumia 900 or other Windows Phone earlier this year.

Now check out the best new smartphones of 2012 >

Otago Rose Society president Maureen Viggo with a bowl of her flowers, including "Scentasia" roses, which won a floral arrangement class in the society's annual show, held in Dunedin at the weekend. Photo by Peter McIntosh.

Otago Rose Society president Maureen Viggo can count on one thing with roses - they always bring a smile to her face.

Recent unsettled weather and a slightly earlier than usual timing of the society's latest annual show meant entries were down on last year.

This year's show began at Forbury Park Raceway on Saturday.

But despite the weather problems, more than 200 floral entries, with a dazzlingly wide range of colours and perfumes, were on display. About 100 members of the public attended the first day of the two-day show.

"I want people to come in that door and say 'Oh wow!'," she said.

Mrs Viggo's first memory of roses was a powerful one - encountering as a 7-year-old a red hybrid tea rose with an "overwhelming" perfume, she said. It was "Etoile de Hollande", which her mother, Netta Campbell, was growing in her rose garden.

When it comes to roses and rose society exhibitions, many things have changed over the years. Busier lifestyles have meant many gardeners no longer have the time they once had to cultivate huge rose gardens and provide large bunches of up to a dozen roses for display at the annual show.

Today's roses on display may be somewhat fewer, and be combined more often with displays of other flowers, but roses still have the same undeniable appeal for rose fanciers whatever the gender, age and occupation.

For Mrs Viggo, who is also a committee member of the group Heritage Roses Otago, part of the appeal of roses is their fascinating history, including the intriguing stories of how roses came to be named, and the behind-the-scenes quests and dreams of rose breeders.

She said that even if people had a little less time for gardening these days, growing roses was part of maintaining a good work-home life balance.

The rose society was always looking for more members, she said.

"We're a warm, friendly group."

Online Marketing, Promotion And Prospecting Techniques for ...

When was the last time you attemptedto get potential customers for your business?? What have you do, advertise?? How did that really work out? ?

I?m guessing that because you are looking over this, you are prepared to see a strategy to boost your leads and customers with a amount of internet website marketing.? These days you understand advertising doesn?t always come up with the way you expected, and you will have to pay extra for it whether you get results or not!

A while ago, I had been inside same position, having blown a wad of dough on ads, and watching my company decrease the tubes.? I didnrrrt possess any money left for hiring professionals, and considered the time had come to consider things into my hands.? All things considered, I?m a business person together with mastered skills to make three successful businesses.? How hard could Affiliate marketing be?

Well, I had been going to uncover, the difficult way, how much I didnrrrt know.? I did developed marketing and advertising skills over twenty-seven many years of running professional services businesses and stores, however they were inadequate for I wanted to perform online.

I considered myself a rather advanced Internet user, but being an Affilite marketer, I had been a rank novice.? I ended up wasting months floundering around on MySpace and places to waste time, but happened to be absolutely nowhere.? I believed that I were built with a good website, but despite the fact that I really could tell that folks would it, I acquired no company from it.

When I stood back out of this and examined what I was doing, I realized a couple of things:? I didn?t have a very clue the things i was doing wrong, and that i couldn?t know the content wrong with my internet site!? Yuck!

Well, this has been a lengthy road since then.? I got a degree in ways to market businesses online, and also have turned the outcome dramatically.? Along the way, I learned a lot of the complexities of web site design and leads generation, and in addition determined a few very simple steps that anyone can try to promote their businesses online.
Here are three free ones:

1.? Write pr announcements about anything newsworthy pertaining to your online business or industry, and post them online to a free directory.? One I prefer is 24-7pressrelease.com. The releases is often as simple as describing new merchandise, announcing a brand new employee, or describing how you are near the forefront connected with an industry trend.? Online pr releases often show up in pursuit of YEARS as soon as they are posted, and making use of them puts you in control of your company?s image.

2.? Writing articles is yet another good way to receive lasting publicity.? There are many article submission sites to write them on, for free.? One of the larger directories is EzineArticles.com.? Not the same as press releases, the content articles are not about news or events, but may be reviews of items, ?how-to? tips, or anything of great interest to your prospective customers.? Like pr campaigns, these postings will most likely appear in looks for you, your online business, or your industry.

3.? Make videos and post them for nothing on YouTube and several other video hosting sites.? Get in front of the digital camera and talk for a couple minutes about anything interesting in your prospective customers.? Create a group of related videos.? One example is, as a Realtor, focus on neighborhoods, condos, housing styles, etc.? These don?t have to be slick to function.? The full idea os for people to get at know and as if you.

In all your marketing, include a hyperlink to your website, as well as a proactive approach.? By way of example, a straightforward is ?Go to my internet site to get additional information on XYZ.?

If you would like to get leads, you would like somehow to collect the information.? Don?t count on people going to your web page, collecting the product and contacting you.? Your internet site should be constructed to capture lead information (name, email, phone, etc.)? The easiest method to make it happen is by getting an e-mail service (called an auto responder) and adding a lead capture form to your site.

You typically offer a no cost report, or perhaps a consultation, newsletter as well in return for opting-in.? This establishes rapport, and you something to reference once you contact charge.? For instance, should you give a totally free set of seagulls, you could start a telephone conversation or maybe your follow-up email? with ?Did you discover that seagull report interesting??

Without getting technical about lead capture forms and auto responders, all that you should know is that?s an uncomplicated thing you must do yourself or have your web designer add it for you.? There are numerous email auto responder services around, and you really are probably getting emails from businesses with these right this moment.? One such service is Constant Contact.
Whichever one you decide on provides the capture form as well as some basic installation instructions in your case.

What These are merely here?s the basics of web marketing campaign.? Should you post one press release, one article and another video obtain, you?ll achieve publicity that would set you back a large amount in the event you paid a company.

These very steps have shown to benefit regarding businesses.? Not surprisingly, your marketing is going to be more effective if you?ve found yourself some additional instruction on the way to structure your presentations and fine-tune your marketing, even so the critical thing is usually to actually start executing it.

A documentary set to air Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, says Rogers, who is on Florida's death row, could know something about the murder of OJ Simpson's wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman (AP Photo/Chris O'Meara, File)

(AP) ? A documentary says a Florida death-row inmate might have been involved in the murder of O.J. Simpson's ex-wife and her friend, a claim being criticized by one victim's family and being looked at skeptically by a detective who has dealt with the convict.

The Investigation Discovery show, "My Brother the Serial Killer," will air Wednesday. The film is a look at Glen Rogers, a carnival worker whom Florida jurors convicted in 1997 of killing a woman in a Tampa motel room.

Rogers, who is now 50, was also convicted of murder in California and is a suspect in homicides in Mississippi, Louisiana and Kentucky ? and possibly several other states.

Most of his victims were women he had met in bars while drifting across the country. All of his victims were stabbed to death. With blazing blue eyes, a scraggly beard and long, blond hair, Rogers was arrested in November 1995, near Waco, Ky., after a nationwide manhunt for the so-called "Cross-Country Killer" and a 100 mph chase.

Rogers, who is from Hamilton, Ohio, met Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994 when he was living in Southern California, his family says in the documentary.

A criminal profiler in the film says he received paintings by Rogers with clues possibly linking him to the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman. The profiler says that Rogers sent him a painting of the murder weapon used in the slayings.

"I believe that Glen believes he killed them," said Anthony Meoli, an Atlanta criminal profiler who has received more than 1,000 letters from Rogers and has interviewed him in prison.

Simpson was accused in those killings but the so-called "trial of the century" in Los Angeles ended with his acquittal in 1995.

Simpson never testified at the criminal trial, but memorably demonstrated in court that a glove found near the slaying scene did not fit his hand. He testified at length in a wrongful death trial that led a Los Angeles civil court jury in 1997 to find him liable for damages in the case. Simpson is serving a prison sentence in Nevada after being convicted in 2008 of leading five men, including two with guns, in a September 2007 confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers and a middleman at a Las Vegas casino-hotel.

Much of the film is narrated by Rogers' brother, Clay Rogers, who used to rob homes with Glen Rogers as a teen but in 1993, called police on his brother after finding a body at the family's Kentucky cabin.

Clay Rogers said that in 1994, weeks before the infamous murders, his brother told him about meeting Nicole Simpson.

"They've got money, they're well off and I'm taking her down," Clay Rogers recalls Glen Rogers saying.

Other family members also said Glen Rogers talked about meeting Simpson's ex-wife.

In a statement, Goldman's sister criticized the documentary.

"I am appalled at the level of irresponsibility demonstrated by the network and the producers of this so-called documentary," Kim Goldman said. "This is the first time we are hearing about this story, and considering that their 'main character,' Glen Rogers, confessed to stabbing my brother and Nicole to death, you would think we would be in the loop."

Meoli said Rogers told him that OJ Simpson paid him to break into Nicole Brown Simpson's house to steal a pair of $20,000 earrings. Other clues, Meoli said, were that Rogers drove a white pickup for his construction job ? a white pickup was seen near the Simpson house on the day of the murders ? and that a second bloody footprint at the scene was never identified.

Rogers' family also said he sent his mother a gold angel pin with a diamond; Rogers later wrote to Meoli that he had sent it to his mother the day after the Simpson murders and implied that he stole it from Nicole Brown Simpson. "It's something everyone missed," Rogers wrote. Rogers' mother wore the pin at his Florida murder trial.

"All those things put together a plausible alternative theory," said Meoli.

In 1996, an Ohio newspaper reported that Rogers told his attorneys that he met Nicole Brown Simpson in a Los Angeles bar.

The film's director, David Monaghan, said Tuesday that he feels investigators should look into Rogers' claims of killing Simpson and Goldman ? and the inmate should be held accountable for several other murders around the country as well.

"I considered very closely on whether I was part of a con game by Glen Rogers," said Monaghan, who said he began looking into Rogers' life during the Tampa trial. "I met many of his victims' families and I met families who have no closure, because Glen has not faced trial in those states. I believe he should not face the death penalty until all those crimes have been investigated."

But at least one detective who interviewed Rogers, though, says the convicted killer is lying in a misguided effort to get off death row.

Dan Frazee, a retired sheriff's deputy from Clermont County, Ohio, questioned Rogers about a 1992 unsolved homicide while Rogers was in prison. Rogers tried to make Frazee believe he had knowledge of the case when he really didn't, in hopes of going to Ohio, Frazee said.

"He's got nothing to do in prison right now but sit there and play games," Frazee said, adding that Rogers talked incessantly about death and murder and was "the most evil person I've ever talked to."

"It's like he has no soul," said Frazee.

Nokia launches HERE maps for iPhone and iPad

Nokia launches HERE maps for iPhone and iPad

Nokia has launched a new, free maps app for iOS, called HERE maps. Since Nokia owns NAVTEQ, one of the world's very few sources of comprehensive mapping data (the other's being Tele Atlas, owned by TomTom and licensed by Apple, and Google), and they've been producing mobile maps apps for years, formerly on Symbian and now on Windows Mobile, the quality will likely be very good.

Maps are available in 200 countries and can be presented in map view (standard line art), satellite view, public transportation view, and live traffic view. Where available, you can also access community view, that includes crowdsourced data that hopes to be even more current. Like any good maps app, you can search for locations, get search suggestions, and share locations you find.

There's routing, of course, and you can get step-by-step voice navigation... for walking directions. But not for driving directions, which is really odd. You can also get public transport directions.

While the app itself uses HTML5 with off-board maps downloaded as needed, you can save maps locally for when you may be in areas without data coverage. You can also group places you frequent, or simply like, into Collections.

The interface is very flat, filled with sold colors, and while not Metro-esque (or whatever Microsoft is calling the Windows Phone design language these days), it does stick to similar basics. The controls are different enough from iOS maps that they'll take some getting used to.

Yet, while Apple continues to struggle with mapping quality and Google continues to posture, dissemble, and fret about the state of their own iOS Maps app, Nokia announced and shipped.

Take that.

Oprah raves about Microsoft's Surface ? from an iPad

16 hrs.

Oprah was called out on a social media gaffe after she tweeted enthusiastically about Microsoft's Surface RT tablet ? but the tweet (first noticed by Zagg) showed that it was sent from an iPad.

It's not the end of the world, certainly, and endorsing a device for someone else's use (she said she'd already bought a dozen as gifts) isn't the same as preferring it or using it oneself. And Winfrey already put the Surface on her list of "favorite things"?for the holidays.

It's not even a sure thing that Winfrey herself tapped out the message; She could easily have dictated it to an iPad-toting assistant.

All the same, it's a funny little situation ? Hopefully, Winfrey?and her social media team will be on the watch for other endorsement cross-talk like this from now on.

Was the Surface one of our favorite things? Watch our video review below.

Consumer Reports 'Naughty & Nice' list

By Herb Weisbaum, TODAY contributor

Santa?s not the only one with a list. Consumer Reports released its annual ?Naughty & Nice? list today, a way to highlight company policies and practices that deserve cheers or jeers.?

The list is based on suggestions from the magazine?s staff as well as Facebook fans. The 100 nominees were whittled down to 10 naughty and 10 nice.?

Tod Marks, Consumer Reports? senior editor, says the companies on the naughty list have ?hidden or tricky fees, fine print or generally unfriendly practices.?? Those on the nice list ?went the extra mile? to make sure their customers were happy patrons.?

Consumer Reports stresses that this list is not an evaluation or rating of a company. It?s a thumbs up or down on a specific policy or practice.?

?We have companies that we like a lot when we rate them, but they make the naughty list, and vice versa,? Marks explained.?

In preparing this year?s Naughty & Nice list, Marks read a lot of the comments posted on the Consumer Reports Facebook page. He told me he noticed a lot of angst and aggravation.?

?People are really ticked off because they don?t feel they have a voice,? he said. ?When they want to get information or complain about something, they can?t get a live human being on the phone or they?re kept on hold for an inordinate amount of time. They feel like their complaints are falling on deaf ears."?

Here are some of the companies that made the Nice list:??

  • Honda got a shout out for putting rearview cameras ? a safety feature normally reserved for high-end vehicles ? on most of its 2013 models. The cameras are now standard on all Honda trucks and SUVs, as well as the top-selling Accord and Civic.?
  • Publix, one of the top-rated supermarket chains in Consumer Reports surveys, won praise for its policy of giving customers an item for free if the scanned price at checkout is more than the shelf price or advertised price. Years ago, this was common practice at many supermarkets.?

Many of the companies won praise for their generous return policy.?

  • OXO guarantees all its ergonomically-designed housewares. If you are not completely satisfied, return it for a refund or replacement.?
  • Safeway promises ?fresh and delicious? produce every time. If you don?t like that mushy melon or bruised apple, bring it back for a refund or replacement.?
  • Red Wing Shoe Company offers an unconditional 30-day comfort guarantee. If you don?t like the way those shoes feel, bring them back for a refund or exchange, no questions asked.?
  • Nordstrom got a tip of the hat for its free shipping and free returns on all orders.?
  • Kohl?s made the list for its ?No Questions Asked ? Hassle-Free? return policy for all purchases, whether online or in-store. There is no time limit. The editors say such a generous policy is uncommon for middle-of-the road retailers.?

Here are some of the companies on the Naughty list:?

  • Spirit Airlines offers super-low prices, but it landed here for its new fee ? as much as $100 ? for carry-on bags that won?t fit under the seat and must be stowed in the overhead bins. ?That?s more than you would pay for a checked bag!? Marks exclaimed. The carry-on fee depends on when you let the airline know you?ll need the over-head bin space: in advance, at the airport or at the gate.?
  • Ticketmaster was cited for charging customers $2.50 per order to print their tickets at home. The editors said that charge is ?especially hard to justify? since Ticketmaster will mail those same tickets for free if you book far enough in advance. The company says tickets are sent out a leisurely 10 to 14 days after purchase.?
  • Forever 21, the apparel store, got dinged for its return policy. If you return an online order to a retail location you can only exchange the item or get a store credit. But if you mail it back, you can get a refund. ?It would be nice if the policy was consistent all around,? Marks said.?
  • CompUSA was called out for automatically adding a ?free? download for antivirus software to some purchases. Consumer Reports shopped the site and found that it was not made clear this free subscription only lasted six months. If it wasn?t cancelled before then, there would be a charge of $49.99. ?We have a pet peeve about those freebies that are automatically added to orders that force people to unclick the item so it?s not added to the shopping cart,? Marks explained.?
  • Tiger Direct.com got slammed for its restocking policy which is ?vague? and has one of the highest penalty fees around. Among other things, Tiger Direct requires returned items to be in the same condition as when sold and in the original packaging. The company says all returns ?will be inspected and products found to be non-conforming will be rejected or subject to a restocking fee? of up to 25 percent at the company?s sole discretion.? It?s not clear what triggers that maximum fee.?

Lessons to be learned?
Tod Marks has been watching retail practices for decades, so he doesn?t expect companies to change their policies based on the magazine?s Naughty & Nice list. He does hope it encourages people to be better consumers.?

?If nothing else, this exercise will show people how important it is to read the fine print and understand that companies do have very divergent policies,? he said. ?It makes sense to understand them and be an informed shopper before you make the purchase."
