5 Great American White-Water Rafting Destinations

August 4, 2013 10:00 AM Text Size: A . A . A White-water rafting can be a great summer escapade, and it's easy to tailor a trip for your crew. For families with young children, a tame river might be the best option. To jolt the teens, rivers akin to crazy roller-coaster rides are the way to go. You can organize a trip to fit any time frame too: overnight outings, day trips, half-day trips, or just an easy float.

First you need to learn the lingo. Here's a quick guide to the kinds of rapids:

? Class I is a nice, gentle ride. This is good for rafters who prefer to float at a leisurely pace.
? Class II involves mild rapids and waves up to 3 feet tall. These rivers are fairly easy to move around in.
? Class III is where the excitement starts to build. There's a good chance of getting wet because waves can be up to 4 feet tall.
? Class IV is not for the faint of heart. Passages are constricted, rapids are long and challenging, and the rafting guide has to operate the craft precisely.
? Class V is like Class IV and then some. It's a pure adrenaline rush.

Some of the best U.S. rivers for a rapids adventures include:

? The American River in California. This river is located in the oak-studded Sierra Nevada foothills. The South Fork of the American River, which flows into the Sacramento River, is a great section for beginners. For a bit more topsy-turvy action, the Middle Fork boasts a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids. It's set in a canyon 2000 feet deep and is surrounded by numerous historic sites from the gold rush era.
? The Colorado River near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. While 4 million people visit the Grand Canyon every year, fewer than 22,000 go white-water rafting in Arizona. Rafters can float through Grand Canyon National Park, starting just below Lake Powell and ending at Lake Mead. This stretch of water offers a mix of Class III and Class IV rapids.
? The Salmon River in Idaho. The Lower and Middle Forks of the Salmon are part of a 100-mile-plus course that has beginner and intermediate rapids. The lower section is especially suited for kids. With milder rapids and sandy beaches, many families love this wildlife adventure.
? The Chattooga River in Georgia and South Carolina. This river features three sections: sections II, III, and IV, which correspond with the class of rapids in each portion. Section II is relaxing. The surroundings are steeped in Native American history and feature an array of wildlife. Section III provides more action and is more challenging, with some serious rapids.
? Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania. This is a great 74-mile river that's within reach for East Coast residents. Sections of the river are calm enough for small children, offering a relaxing float. Other parts offer up more white-water exploits for intermediate and advanced rafters. Another plus: The season is on the long side, generally lasting from April to September.

Would-be rafters should always check with guiding companies to confirm when trips are offered and to note any age requirements. Most rafting outfitters have a guide on each raft. Life jackets and helmets are usually required, and some companies offer wet suits during the colder spring months.

EasyGroup to launch budget supermarket in Britain

(Reuters) - EasyGroup Chairman Stelios Haji-Ioannou said on Sunday he planned to open a low-cost food retail business in Britain, easyFoodstore, aimed at undercutting prices at German discount grocers Aldi and Lidl.

The founder of budget carrier easyJet said the project was a "low risk experiment" to be run out of a pilot store in south London.

"There is a gap in the food retail market - a niche below some of the current budget operators such as Aldi and Lidl," he said in a statement.

Set to offer basic, no-brand-name, packet and tinned foods at lower prices, easyFoodstore could be rolled out on a wider basis from 2014 onwards, Stelios said.

EasyGroup, Stelios' private investment vehicle, operates its "easy" brand in several sectors including travel, leisure and hospitality.

Listed by Forbes as the third most wealthy Cypriot billionaire, Stelios is easyJet's largest single shareholder despite being at odds with the airline since he quit its board in 2010.

Wall Street slips after data, holds near record

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks slipped on Friday after data showed U.S. hiring slowed in July but the jobless rate fell, mixed signals that could make the U.S. Federal Reserve more cautious about drawing down its economic stimulus.

Consumer spending, however, increased in June and inflation pushed higher, while new orders for U.S. factory goods rose for the third straight month in June, data that could strengthen expectations that the Fed will wind down its bond purchases later this year.

The key jobs report showed non-farm payrolls rose by 162,000 in July, below expectations, but the unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent, its lowest reading since December 2008.

"Nothing in the jobs report says the economy is standing on its own. It was a confusing jobs report and it pushes tapering a little bit deeper into the fourth quarter," said Ron Florance, deputy chief investment officer at Wells Fargo Private Bank in Scottsdale, Arizona, in reference to expectations of the Fed's stimulus wind-down.

"Yesterday's rally was so strong, a little bit of retracement is not unexpected."

The S&P 500 posted Thursday its strongest day in three weeks to close above the 1,700 level for the first time.

The Fed's support has been a pillar of the recovery from the deepest recession since the Great Depression, and the U.S. central bank has reiterated that it will continue to stimulate the economy until it is capable of standing on its own.

Traders of short-term U.S. interest-rate futures boosted bets that the Fed will wait until 2015 before raising short-term borrowing costs after the payrolls report.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 56.13 points or 0.36 percent, to 15,571.89, the S&P 500 <.spx> lost 4.72 points or 0.28 percent, to 1,702.15 and the Nasdaq Composite <.ixic> dropped 7.14 points or 0.19 percent, to 3,668.61.

Dell's special committee and a group led by founder and chief executive Michael Dell announced a deal that dramatically increases the chances of his $24.6 billion buyout going through. Dell shares gained 4.8 percent to $13.58.

LinkedIn shares jumped 9.8 percent to $233.88 and several brokerages raised their price targets on the stock after results on Thursday topped expectations.

AIG Inc also beat expectations on Thursday and announced its first capital return since its 2008 bailout through a dividend and share buyback, sending its shares up 3.4 percent to $48.67.

Shares of MercadoLibre rose 10.1 percent to $133.68 a day after the Latin American e-commerce company reported quarterly results above analysts' expectations.

Of the 375 companies in the S&P 500 that reported earnings for the second quarter through Thursday morning, 67.5 percent have topped analyst expectations, in line with the average beat over the past four quarters, data from Thomson Reuters show. About 55 percent have reported revenue above estimates, more than the average beat of the past four quarters but below the historical average.

'Sons of Anarchy' boss talks horrifying premiere

Brace yourself when "Sons of Anarchy" kicks off season six next month. To say that the horrific conclusion in the premiere about a violent motorcycle club is "controversial" is one of the greatest understatements of the year.?

But that was never creator Kurt Sutter's intention, he insisted Friday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

"I've wanted to do that story for about three years," he told reporters. "It's an organic story to our world ... thematically, it's the right thing. ... Nothing is done gratuitously. "?

Although the episode was screened for critics, the showrunner sincerely hopes the cataclysmic events aren't leaked before its broadcast ? but not just because spoilers will diminish its shock value.?

"I don't want it viewed as us doing it to be controversial, to bring more eyes to the episode," he said. "I'm worried more about that kind of blowback" than the public's response following its airing.

"There's not really a statement I'm trying to make within the story," Sutter said, noting that the episode's events are integral to everything that follows in the last two seasons of "Sons of Anarchy."?

"This is a story that's not being done to be sensational. It is truly the catalyst for the final act of our morality play. It sets everything in motion for this season that will ultimately lead to the end, and then will bring us into the final season and what I see as the ultimate comeuppance of everything in terms of the series."?

"I didn't want to do that and ultimately have it just be a story beat and then go away," he told TODAY.com.?

"Sons of Anarchy" returns Tuesday, Sept. 10 on FX.

CONSUMER ALERT: An elaborate scheme to steal tens of thousands of dollars. Some of the money was intended for the hungry and homeless. The victims were caught and now their victims are angry.

Paul McFann is not mincing words when he speaks about this con artist. He is talking about the former secretary and treasurer of his church's council, Jane Loprest.

Loperest stole more than $119,000 from the church.

McFann says, "She had endeared herself to many. She's extremely intelligent, extremely personable, very knowledgeable with technology and most importantly, her ability to help others."

McFann, president of the church council, says Loprest used those traits to gain people's trust and then began raiding church accounts.

"She would cut checks to herself, she would increase her pay. She increased her pay, doubled or tripled her pay."

Laura Carter, a US Postal Inspector, says, "She covered her tracks really well. There were never any accounts that the church was overdrawn because of the way she was conducting the scheme."

Postal Inspectors used these surveillance photos from the bank used by the church to track deposits and withdraws.

They found that Loprest would write checks but never issue them. So, the books might "look" correct, but she was actually taking the cash for herself.

McFann says, "There were a number of contributions and causes, people in need, that were never met because the checks were never sent."

This is what made the 120 parishioners of this small church so angry.

McFann says, "I really believe it was a chess game, she loved the challenge, how long can I get by with this? What new approaches can I use?"

Postal Inspectors say oversight is key for any organization, whether it's for-profit or non-profit.

Carter says, "Conduct annual audit with a CPA, volunteers are great, but you need that CPA to give you what's going on with your books."

Janet Loprest plead guilty, and spent one year in jail.

She was also ordered to pay more than $100,000 dollars in restitution back to the church.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? Yankees fan Matt Kowalski made the short trip to Arm & Hammer Park, hoping to catch one more look at Alex Rodriguez.

Kowalski got to see what he wanted ? Rodriguez homered Friday night for the Trenton Thunder, and many in the sellout crowd cheered as the embattled New York star rounded the bases.

"I live 20 minutes away, and it could be the last chance to see him play," said Kowalski, of Mount Laurel. "It's kind of hard to not come out. I'm afraid something's pending. That's the rumor, at least."

Major League Baseball is set to suspend 14 players on Monday in the Biogenesis drug case, with Rodriguez likely to get the stiffest penalty. The 38-year-old third baseman hasn't played in the majors this season while recovering from hip surgery and a strained quadriceps.

Rodriguez left Friday night after five innings. He later said the Yankees told him the tentative plan is for him to rejoin the big league team in Chicago for Monday night's game against the White Sox.

Rodriguez said he's confident that will happen "unless I get hit by lightning, and these days you never know."

"I am mentally prepared to play for five more years," he said. "It's not time for me to hang it up. I have a lot more left in me. I will keep fighting."

The Yankees have said Rodriguez will play for Trenton on Saturday. The Yankees are in San Diego this weekend.

"I wish they would come in a plane tonight. I wish I was in San Diego," he said. "I can't wait to see my teammates. I think I can help them. I think I can help them be a better team."

Rodriguez rejoined the Yankees' Double-A farm team earlier in the day, his second minor league rehabilitation assignment during this comeback. After drawing a walk in the first inning, he hit a long two-run homer in the third inning against Reading lefty Jesse Biddle, a No. 1 draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010.

Rodriguez leisurely circled the bases to the cheers of the 8,080 fans, many who applauded in admiration of the shot. The three-time American League MVP pointed to someone behind home plate after touching it and headed to the dugout for congratulations by his temporary teammates.

There were some boos during the night.

"I think there were a lot of Phillies fans out there," he said. "A lot of people cheered when I hit the home run."

In the fifth inning, Rodriguez was called out on strikes. He talked to a couple of fans in the stands, signed a few autographs and gave away his bat, and exited the game.

Cheryl Dacey of Princeton Junction sat behind a couple of Philles fans who booed every time Rodriguez came to the plate. She totally enjoyed seeing him quiet them up with his home run.

"In my opinion, I'm 52, I think A-Rod is one of the best players I will see in my lifetime for baseball," said the longtime Yankees fan. "I think there is a witch hunt on for him."

She got a chance to tell Rodriguez that, too. She left the stadium after he was taken out with her No. 13 Yankees uniform autographed.

Earlier in the game, Rodriguez knocked down a hard grounder and threw the batter out at first by a half step.

Prior to the game, Rodriguez smiled a lot, met his teammates and shook hands with coaches after stepping on the field at 4:13 p.m. He did not field questions from a massive media contingent before taking batting practice, throwing and fielding grounder in a 30-minute preparation for the game against the Fightin Phils.

This was Rodriguez's second appearance with the Thunder this season, but the first one in New Jersey.

While there were a couple of A-Rod jerseys in the stands, there also were Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira tops sprinkled in along with some from Philadelphia players.

The 30-year-old Kowalski wore a Rodriguez uniform, and was somewhat forgiving when asked about A-Rod's problems.

"It's hard not to appreciate what A-Rod did for the Yankees," he said. "Anyone who turns a blind eye to 2009 is kidding themselves. They don't win a ring in 2009 without him, so it's hard to forget that."

Thunder Manager Tony Franklin did not think Rodriguez's presence would be a distraction.

"Our guys understand the circumstances around this," he said. "It's all about baseball for our guys. One thing about baseball players is when the game they have a unique ability to separate what's on the field from what's off the field."

It was hard not to notice Rodriguez's every step. Cameramen and reporters stared at him, and they looked over his shoulder as he signed autographs 20 minutes before the first pitch.

"I expect him to be productive in this lineup," Franklin said of a player with 647 career home runs in the bigs. "We're in a pennant race, and I say it jokingly, but I look for the same effort he always gives. He's the consummate professional when it comes to playing the game. The game means everything to him."

Franklin kidded Rodriguez could keep up the tradition of stars buying food spreads for the minor leaguers after the game.

On a more serious note, he said Rodriguez is "a regular guy" who can impart a lot to his players. He also wanted to see him in action.

"I love watching him play," Franklin said. "I am still a fan of baseball and watching him play on the baseball field is what I enjoy."

Family parties are always a favorite of mine.? This party was even more special since it was a welcome home party for my cousin Sarah.? She's been in Spain for the past year and I missed her!? So anyway, I picked a few photos from the day, which was mostly spent in the pool, and decided to watercolor a lot.

A look at the full layout that I used die cut arrows from my silhouette.? I cut them on white cardstock and watercolored each arrow ranging from pink to purple.? I tried to make each of the colors different so they looked like they were flowing into each other.?

It's hard not to watch Fruitvale Station with a coiled dread... Yet, Coogler's greatest achievement may be in reminding us that Grant was a work in progress with people who loved him in spite of his flaws and because of his hopes.

We feel the death on the platform so acutely not because it's a stupid act of randomness, but hardly untypical racist violence, but because we've come to love this man.

Michael B. Jordan (The Wire and Friday Night Lights) plays Oscar with the heart and compelling charm required to make us feel close to him.

It's a story of one young man's tragedy, a story that resonates with so many other tragedies. Oscar Grant wasn't some mere symbol; this film makes him flesh and, unfortunately, blood.

An eloquent memorial for a man who barely experienced life, and a haunting reminder of how quickly it can be lost.

Some of this narrative feels cliched, but Coogler and his actors make it work by leaning toward understatement.

This dramatic story is told in a fair and balanced way, supplemented with excellent acting.

A powerful acknowledgement of existence

It's funny how the bloated, overly lengthy studio blockbusters have far less impact than 90 minutes of a relatively brief, CGI-free 'little' movie such as 'Fruitvale Station.'

The slow first hour is more than compensated for by the half hour climax that leaves one in tears.

As Grant, Michael B. Jordan's stunning good looks and immaculately restrained acting affects even those who don't want to be manipulated-who want to watch this story with unfogged eyes.

Without emotion-tweaking music or too much fictional streamlining and highlighting, he captures a sense of the random and pointless horror of a young man shot in the back while laying on his stomach

...writer-director Ryan Coogler and his actors do such a good job the film is consistently compelling despite its predestined finale.

after seeing Fruitvale Station you should come away with the impulse to muse on the life behind the next tragic homicide in the news that sparks debate ...

The film is both personal and universal. Jordan can be so touching, and his intimidating ferocity is palpable. This is an important picture with a breakout performance.

Fruitvale Station's arrival in theaters corresponds with the outcry over the Trayvon Martin case. But Fruitvale did not need added relevancy to be remarkable.

Fruitvale Station is a heart-rending stop; just remember that the line doesn't end there.

Was Oscar Grant going to turn his life around? We'll never know because of a pointless act of violence.

Coogler's take quietly serves to show Grant as a human being, with his flaws and redeeming qualities, and not just as a face in a newspaper obituary.

...a palpably low-key premise that's employed to continuously engrossing effect by first-time writer/director Ryan Coogler...

'Fruitvale Station' is a movie people are going to be talking about and it's a conversation you don't want to be left out of.

You wonder if Coogler would have felt freer had Grant somehow lived that night, if the director weren't put in a position where he felt the need to honor the dead by bringing him to dramatic life. But he believes in his ambition.

Many recent movies so cavalierly dispense thousands upon thousands of ammunition rounds, you can sometimes forget the effect that one bullet can have on human life.

A tragically relevant and incredibly important film that deserves all the attention it can get from American audiences.

Facebook and the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) teamed up to create a guide on privacy and safety aimed at survivors of abuse. While the guide may be particularly helpful for survivors of domestic violence, dating abuse, cyber-stalking and the like, it is also the clearest, most informative guide to Facebook's privacy and safety features we've seen in quite some time.

"Privacy and safety go hand in hand for survivors. The most dangerous time for a victim of abuse is when they are preparing to leave or have left an abusive partner," a post by Cindy Southworth, NNEDV's vice president of development and innovation, and Erica Olsen, an NNEDV senior technology safety specialist, explains. "It is critical that survivors have the information that they need to navigate their lives safely and, in today?s digital age, a significant part of our lives are online."

"Telling a victim to go offline to be safe is not only unacceptable, it further isolates her from people who love her," the post emphasizes. "Survivors shouldn?t have to live their lives avoiding every possible situation that the abusive person could misuse."

The guide very clearly fits with that theme. It reviews all the Facebook features which allow users control over the content and information they share, who may be able to see which details, how to protect accounts from being hijacked, and how to report abusive content and communications.

There are a lot of things which are known ? and perhaps even very obvious ? to many Facebook users, such as reminders that the content you post on other users' Timelines may be visible to a wider audience than you realize or that it's possible to receive a notification whenever your account is accessed from a new device, but the guide is worth a read nonetheless. It clearly lays out concepts with which survivors as well as novice Facebook users may desperately need to familiarize themselves.

Well-written as it may be, this guide doesn't offer much in the way of options for survivors who need the ability to use a pseudonym online. Southworth tells NBC News that using an alternate name or legally changing one's name is not necessarily the best option for most situations. "The work we?ve done over the past few decades has drastically reduced the number of victims who need to apply to change their names and social security numbers ? we?ve been documenting this decrease on the ground and it has been confirmed by the Social Security Administration."

"Friends who have less motivation to lock down everything may post an announcement of an event that, in effect, announces the location of a victim. And when victims' comments on friends' posts are made visible, this too can be used to glean information," Danah Boyd, a senior researcher at Microsoft Research, whose research focuses on young people and social media, countered in an email to NBC News. "What victims need ? more than anything ? is not to be able to be found, online or offline."
