American Academy of Arts and Sciences president to resign in resume scandal

At least she didn?t claim to be a Nobel prize winner.? Via Slashdot:

?The 233-year old American Academy of Arts and Sciences has announced that its longtime President and Chief Executive, Leslie Cohen Berlowitz, has agreed to resign effective at the end of this month following an investigation of charges of resume embellishment and other misconduct.

Berlowitz falsely claimed to have received a doctorate from New York University, and has also been criticized for her behavior towards scholars and subordinates, and for her compensation package ($598,000 for 2012) relative to the size of the non-profit organization she led.

The Academy, based in Cambridge MA, was founded during the American Revolutionary War and is one of the most prestigious honorary societies for the American intellectual elite, extending across math and science, arts and letters, business, law and public affairs. The active membership rolls contain people you?ve heard of; the incoming class list provides a more manageable glimpse of the society?s breadth.?

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is big on pushing this pet project: ?the Alternative Energy Future?

New Nexus 7 models now out of stock at Staples

Out of stock

The laws of supply and demand at work: Staples sells out of new Nexus 7 tablets.

It seems that Staples's $30 off tablet promotion worked well for them, as both model of the new Nexus 7 are already out of stock on their website. They join the 32GB version at Amazon, which now has a lead time of three to four weeks before orders can be filled.

Of course you can still try your luck at Google Play, or call around your local Best Buy and Walmart stores to see if they have any sitting quietly on the shelves.

We're glad to see the demand, but we sure hope we don't see a repeat of the last time.

Bolt stirs London 2012 memories with vintage performance on return to Olympic Stadium

By Nick Butler at the Olympic Stadium in London

bolt after winning 100mJuly 26 - Usain Bolt returned to the scene of his three gold medals at London 2012 as he once again dazzled the Olympic Stadium at the Sainsbury's Anniversary Games, an event held to mark a year since the Games opened here.

The Olympic flame may have been removed from the Stadium but the Jamaican, winner of the 100 and 200 metres and 4x100m for the second consecutive Olympics last year, still managed to light up the arena on the first day of this two-day event.

He recovered from a terrible start to emphatically burst clear of American Michael Rodgers and compatriot Nester Carter to win in 9.85sec, his fastest of the season.

Former world champion Kim Collins finished fourth ahead of Britain's Dwain Chambers, after his teammate James Dasaolu - who had won 9.91 earlier in the month - withdrew shortly before the race due to injury.

Elsewhere, there were world leading performances from the Czech Republic's 400m hurdler Zusana Hejnova and American 3,000m runner Shannon Rowbury, while Ukraine's Bohdan Bondarenko had two narrow failures at a world record height of 2.47 metres after already securing victory in the high jump.

Yet there was no doubt which performance the crowd had enjoyed most as Bolt's introduction was accompanied a wave of 60,000 flashbulbs across the stadium.

He had begun the evening by by being transported into the arena in a gigantic metallic vehicle, described as a "rocket ship".

"I felt great, I'm so excited to be here again," said Bolt.

"I had a bad start it's not the best part of my game but I did okay.

"It's so wonderful to compete in London, it's a brilliant experience to be here again."

But he was nearly upstaged by 23-year-old Bondarenko, who had finished only seventh in this Stadium a year ago in the Olympics.

Having won the competition with a clearance of 2.38m at his his first attempt,?Bondarenko failed once at 2.43m before his two attempts at 2.47m, which both came close to breaking the world record of 2.45m set by Cuba's Javier Sotomayor in 1993.

Hejnova won in a world leading time of 53.07 to break her own national record, finishing ahead of?Britain's Perri Shakes Drayton came second in a personal best of 53.67, roared on by a passionate home crowd which evoked memories of the atmosphere Team GB athletes had enjoyed during London 2012.

But, just as they did mostly during the Olympics, they also appreciated the efforts of the international athletes.

"I love it here, it's very nice here with great memories from the Olympic Games" said Hejnova, who had won the bronze medal at London 2012.?

In what proved a good night for American athletes, Rowbury ran 8min 41.46sec to win the 3,000m in a clean sweep ahead of compatriots Gabriele Anderson and early pacesetter Molly Huddle.

Grenada's Kirani James, whose victory was so unexpected and joyous here last year, enjoyed a happy return as he won the 400m in?44.65.

Over 200m, Jamaican national champion and Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir won ?in 19.89 ahead of compatriot Jason Young.

It illustrated that the gap between Jamaican sprinters and the rest of the world remains as vast as ever - although, with so many top names from that country having tested positive recently, including former world 100m record holder Asafa Powell, suspicions will continue to linger.

There was a Diamond League record for Cuba's Yarisley Silva in the pole vault, with the Olympic silver medallist winning in 4.83 metres and beating the women who finished ahead of her in London, Jennifer Suhr, who cleared 4.73m for second as Fabiana Murer of Brazil placed third.

New Render Showcases Apple?s 5th Generation iPad

Some new renders shows us what we could see from the next 5th generation iPad. The new render, developed by artist Martin Hajek was created with a recent spec sheet in mind, as well as other aesthetic influences. The 5th generation iPad is expected to come touting a?2048 x 1536 retina display.

Hajek?s render shows the 5th generation iPad with a design similar to that of the most recent iPad mini, with rounded edges and a lightning connector. The body appears to be thinner and smaller than the 4th generation iPad, but with the same screen size.

Rumors have been pointing to a September release of the 5th generation iPad, alongside the upcoming iPhone 5S.

Check out the renders below. What do you think of the new iPad renders?

Feds: Halliburton agrees to plead guilty in 2010 Gulf oil spill

Washington ? Halliburton Energy Services has agreed to plead guilty to destroying evidence in connection with the 2010 Gulf oil spill, the Department of Justice said Thursday.

Federal officials said in a news release that a criminal information charging Halliburton with one count of destruction of evidence was filed in federal court in Louisiana.

Halliburton has agreed to pay the maximum fine, be on probation for three years and continue to cooperate with the government?s criminal investigation, according to the news release, which did not list the amount of the fine.

The Houston-based company has also made a $55 million voluntary contribution to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. It was not a condition of the court agreement, the news release says.

The company said in a statement Thursday night that it had agreed to plead guilty ?to one misdemeanor violation associated with the deletion of records created after the Macondo well incident, to pay the statutory maximum fine of $200,000 and to accept a term of three years probation.?

The Justice Department has agreed it will not pursue further criminal prosecution of the company or its subsidiaries for any conduct arising from the 2010 spill, Halliburton?s statement said, adding that federal officials have also ?acknowledged the company?s significant and valuable cooperation during the course of its investigation.?

The plea agreement is subject to court approval, the company said.

Halliburton was BP?s cement contractor on the drilling rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The blowout triggered an explosion that killed 11 workers and spilled millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf.

According to the news release, Halliburton conducted its own review of the well?s design and construction after the blowout, and established a working group to review ?whether the number of centralizers used on the final production casing could have contributed to the blowout.?

The casing is a steel pipe placed in a well to maintain its integrity.

Centralizers are metal collars attached on the outside of the casing. Centralizers can help keep the casing centered in the wellbore.

?Centralization can be significant to the quality of subsequent cementing around the bottom of the casing,? the news release said.

Prior to the blowout, Halliburton had recommended to BP the use of 21 centralizers in the well, but BP decided to use six instead, the news release says.

Around May 2010, the news release says, the company directed a program manager to conduct two computer simulations of the Macondo well final cementing job ?to compare the impact of using six versus 21 centralizers.?

The simulations indicated there was little difference between using six and 21 centralizers, but the program manager ?was directed to, and did, destroy these results,? federal officials say.

Similar evidence was destroyed in a subsequent incident, in June 2010, the Justice Department said.

?Efforts to forensically recover the original destroyed Displace 3D computer simulations during ensuing civil litigation and federal criminal investigation by the Deepwater Horizon Task Force were unsuccessful,? the news release said. ?In agreeing to plead guilty, Halliburton has accepted criminal responsibility for destroying the aforementioned evidence.?

The plea agreement and criminal charge both arise from a criminal investigation by the Deepwater Horizon Task Force into the spill.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans recently presided over a trial in the matter and could decide how much more money BP, Halliburton and rig owner Transocean Ltd. owe for their roles in the catastrophe.

Halliburton and BP have blamed each other for the failure of the cement job to seal the Macondo well.

During the spring trial, BP asked a federal judge to sanction Halliburton for allegedly destroying evidence about the role that its cement slurry design could have played in the blowout.

After the trial started on Feb. 25, Halliburton discovered cement samples at a Lafayette laboratory that weren?t turned over to the Justice Department for testing after the spill. Halliburton lawyers called it a ?simple misunderstanding? and accused BP of trying to create a ?sideshow.?

Halliburton announced in April that it was trying to negotiate a settlement to resolve a substantial portion of private claims it has faced since the Deepwater Horizon rig blast spawned America?s worst offshore oil spill.
