Simple Detox: Bentonite Clay - Homegrown & Healthy

Clay ranks high in my list of favorite detox mediums. Simple and versatile, this is a detox that you can feel. There?s a wide rainbow of clays to choose from, but we?ll focus on the more common bentonite clay.

Bentonite is a light to medium gray powder that is often used in construction. Of course, depending on the detox, you will want to get high quality clay from a natural foods or supplement store. For an internal bentonite detox, be sure to get clay that is safe for internal use.

Why Bentonite Clay?

A bentonite clay solution is negatively charged and moderately alkaline. This effectively draws out positively charged, acidic toxins. Anyone who has tried a clay-based face mask knows that clay is also extremely drawing. Clay greatly expands when mixed with water and shrinks dramatically to its original size as it dries. This action sucks out toxins, especially acne-causing bacteria, through the pores. I love using a clay solution in place of calamine lotion on bug bites and poison oak rash as well. Clay can be used externally in baths, masks, pastes and washes.

Bentonite clay is celebrated as an internal detox as well. I did try this once, but could not get over the chalky feel. Clay is very effective externally for me, so I generally pass on ?eating dirt.? I can?t provide specifics for this kind of detox, but if you choose to go this route be sure to purchase bentonite clay for internal use and research proper detox methods.

>>CAUTION<<

Clay detox baths can be taken at ay temperature, but still pose a risk. If at any time you feel light headed or dizzy, add cool water to the tub or put a cold wash cloth on your head. Drink LOTS of water. Get out of the tub very slowly. If you have any medical conditions, check with your doctor before performing any kind of detox. Hot baths are not recommended for people with high blood pressure.

Ingredients

  • 1/4-1 Cup Bentonite Clay
  • 1 Gallon of cool water with ice and lemon (lemon aids detoxification)
  • Bowl of ice water and wash cloth (optional, for hot baths)
  • 3-4 drops Essential Oil of choice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Shower and wash thoroughly before taking a detox bath.
  2. Fill your tub with water that feels most comfortable to you. Bentonite Clay baths can be taken hot, but are certainly effective at any temperature.
  3. Dissolve bentonite clay into a small bowl, doing your best to smash any chunks. Once well mixed, add your clay solution to the tub. If using essential oils, add them to the running water as your tub fills.
  4. Soak in the tub for as long as feels comfortable, 40 minutes is generally recommended.
  5. Remember to stay hydrated! You probably wont drink the entire gallon of water, but it?s good to have around just in case.
  6. When you?re finished, drain the tub and get out slowly. Some weakness is to be expected.
  7. Some people recommend showering again after the detox bath, others say that it?s best to air dry, letting the mineral-rich water soak into your skin.
