Articles 20VN | Who, What, When Where, and How of Baby Shower ...

Who will "throw" the baby shower?

Just about anyone--but most likely it would be a friend, relative or coworkers of the mother to be or the dad to be. Generally, the baby shower is not arrange by the closest relatives such as the baby's grandmother but an aunt may sometimes give the shower. In many cases there is more than just one baby shower given. Since work and family and church may consist of unrelated friendships and connections, it is not uncommon to have multiple showers.

When should the party be hosted?

It helps to take into consideration the new mother and new father and their wishes. Most wait until the third trimester (between 6 and 8 months along). By then, the nursery colors and style of decor may have been chosen most likely due to the baby's gender having been determined. Also, the time of year may affect your plans. Some holidays, such a Christmas, will have an influence on the timing of the event.

Where should the baby shower be held?

What is so nice about this event is that it can be held as economically and close to home or as lavishly and jam packed as you would prefer. The party can be held at a friend or family member's home and works nicely with a small group. Many restaurants, tea houses, and local party houses make space and catering available for gatherings such as a baby shower. Public and commercial buildings often offer meeting rooms for showers.

What theme should the shower have?

Baby showers can be very focused on specific themes either just for entertainment or because it has a special meaning for the parents. If a circus of primary colors are to be seen in the nursery or a particular cartoon or nursery rhyme character are part of the decor, you may want to carry that into the baby shower theme. The gender of the child may also dictate the colors and party ideas. And there is also the availability of ethnic baby shower themes today. Beyond the baby themes of pink and blue, the trend for parents who love their team is the collegiate shower theme complete with collegiate diaper cake, party decorations and little collegiate baby fan clothing featuring their favorite college team.

How will you invite the guests?

Invitations will kick off the excitement of and validate the event if an official printed invitation is sent. We have the tendency today to let word of mouth and email take care of our responsibilities but the invitation not only serves as a physical reminder, it also makes for a lot of fun and sets the tone for the baby shower attendance and the gifts. With home printers you can design and print the invitation at home for the crafty, economical baby shower. For a more formal or themed baby shower, consider having professional or preprinted invitations.

Any ideas for making this shower different?

Nothing says the shower is for just the mother alone. Today the father is often included in the festivities. With the innovations in new dad gifts, this is the perfect place to give a gift for new dad and new baby and celebrates his new status. Dad diaper backpacks and new dad t-shirts are perfect examples. And this also is true for giving the new grandparents a little help. They will certainly need some baby items such as car seats, playpens, diaper bags and the like for the times their grandchild comes for an overnight visit.

If you are giving someone a baby shower, takes notes of the activities, save a copy of the invitation and photographs of the event for the new mom and dad to remember always.
