A recent transplant to Utah, Abby Benninghoff decided to take a trip to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in June 2011.

"I jumped at the chance to explore the southern deserts, which provide just about the best landscapes for photography that I've ever seen," Benninghoff told TODAY.com.

She spent several days hiking and camping with her dog, Indy. One morning she happened upon a sign with information about the hike to Lower Calf Creek Falls.

"On the spur of the moment, I decided to take the 6-mile round trip trek up the Navajo sandstone canyon with Indy," she said.

"When we reached the halfway point at the Lower falls, I was amazed to see this beautiful oasis at the end of our trek; the water was perfectly clear and the spray from the falls was cool and refreshing.

"This hike definitely rates as one of my favorites," Benninghoff said. "I carried away some very special memories from our day at Calf Creek Falls."
